Cancer is the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. Cancer is a condition where cells in a specific part of the body grow and reproduce uncontrollably. Usually when we as humans hear the word cancer we think of the worst scenario possible. We as humans are use to hearing that you shouldn’t smoke cigarettes because you’ll get long cancer or that you shouldn’t stay in the sun to long to reduce the risk of skin cancer but there are many other factors that lead to cancer that people are unaware about. Have you ever asked yourself if you should monitor what you eat, drink, or inhale to prevent cancer? Or if your day to day activities could be increasing your risk of developing cancer. DNA and ribonucleic acid are nucleic acids; alongside proteins, lipids and complex carbohydrates, they are one of the four major types of macromolecules that are essential for all known forms of life. DNA is shaped like a double helix. The DNA inside a cell is packaged into a large number of individual genes, each of which contains a set of instructions telling the cell what functions to perform, as well as how to grow and divide. Nearly every cell in a person’s body has the same DNA. Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA). Genes are coiled together and stored as chromosomes in the nucleus of a cell. Genes control how your cells work by making proteins. These proteins have specific functions and act as messengers for the cell. Each gene must have the correct instructions for making its protein. This allows the protein to perform the correct function for the cell. Errors in the instructions for DNA and genes can cause the cell to stop its normal function and may allow a cell to become cancerous. All cancers begin when one or more genes in a cell
