I. Stress is an inevitable part of life. We’ve all experienced it before.
a. Your palms get sweaty.
b. Your muscles are tense.
c. You feel depressed. You feel sad.
d. You try to think of a way out, but nothing seems to work.
e. You’re stressed.
II. As defined by The American Institute of Stress, Stress is a physical, mental or emotional tension.
III. According to survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, 7 out of 10 adults in the United States say they experience stress or anxiety daily, with most of them saying that it interferes their lives.
IV. Stress can be a positive thing
a. It can help an individual grow, develop, and take action in their lives.

One way to manage stress is by exercising. You don’t have to be an athlete or spend hours in a gym to experience the benefits. Any form of physical activity can help relieve stress and burn away anger, tension, and frustration.
i. According to a study done by the Anxiety Disorder Association of America, exercising produces endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers. It is effective in reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, enhancing one’s overall well being in general.
b. Other than exercising, another strategy to manage stress is to engage socially.
i. Social engagement is the quickest, most efficient way to combat stress.
1. There is nothing more calming to your nervous system than communicating with another human being who makes you feel safe and understood. Reach out to family and friends. Connect with them regularly in person. The people you talk to don’t have to be able to fix your stress; they just need to be good listeners.
2. Opening up is not a sign of weakness. In fact, most friends will be flattered that you trust them enough to confide in them, and it will only strengthen your bond.
