Informative Speech: The Work Of Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi, or “the great-souled one” as called by many of his followers was a leading figure in the fight for India’s independence, but he also was an advocate for world peace, showing his devotion with many “hunger strikes” (History.com staff, 2010). One of his greatest quotes, “No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive” shows the biggest fault of cultural inequality. This displays to me that people cannot work together while refusing to accept others.

As the world progresses to live its continuous life many problems of destruction, chaos, and violence are. For the sake of that, many leaders are being brought into this world to create order and peace. Martin Luther King Jr, an African American Civil Rights activist, is known for succeeding in bringing racial equality. A famous quote by Ken Blanchard says, “The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority.” Martin Luther King Jr. may have been a compassionate, devoted leader, by heart, but someone had inspired him. His bravery, courageousness, and philosophy was all based on that of Mahatma Karamchand Gandhi. Out of so many influential individual, the one that I personally admire the most is Mahatma Gandhi. He was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. By practicing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for people’s rights across India, or even the world.

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi, a man thought of as a legend, has humanity looking back on his work in history and has influenced and changed cultures around the world. An act that Gandhi has made an impact on the world with was his famous Salt March in the 1930s. In order to win India its freedom from the British control Gandhi broke the law that no one was allowed to make salt at the sea’s shore.

Throughout the course of history there have been many influential leaders that have stressed the use of non-violence and civil disobedience including Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi was a very influential and inspiring leader that was able to lead billions of people. He was willing to give up everything for what he believed in even though he knew that his actions could possibly lead to imprisonment and other legal consequences. Gandhi’s bravery and perseverance led to changes that affected and influenced the whole world and brought about positive change for people whose voices would have went unheard.

In studying the Christian world view, there are people who, do not share this view, yet contribute such a great amount to human kind that recognition is deserved. Mahatma Gandhi is one such person. Gandhi’s development and utilization of Satyagraha; (“which literally means holding firm to reality or truth firmness”) non-violent form of protesting, impacted Indians, the world and inspired other civil rights leaders. (Richards, 1995). Gandhi desired improved treatment of Indians who worked and lived in South Africa. He also desired that India seceded from the rule of Great Brittan. Who Gandhi was is demonstrated in his struggle for social issues, the simplistic lifestyle (shunning money and career), and his devotion to his Hindu.

Mahatma Gandhi led one of the biggest movements in the world and inspired others, therefore many people might not have the privileges that they have today if it weren't for him.

Strong, resilient, and peaceful are three words that pop into peoples minds where they think of Gandhi. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, and he came from a Hindu family. His family was in the third caste. When he was growing up, there was a lot of racism from Britains in India. Indians had little rights when Gandhi was growing up. When Gandhi realized this, he dedicated his life to fighting for India and its inhabitants rights. Gandhi changed the world by showing people that you can be overwhelmingly strong without using force when he and thousands of other citizens and Indian rights activists protested peacefully, and shook the world. When Gandhi died, he left behind his legacy as father of peaceful protest.

Gandhi has touched and changed lives through his line of work. People young and old, colored or not, religious or not have come together to exercise Gandhi’s movements. He wanted to make a change to the world. This is important, because so many people don’t know how to peacefully protest and change the world appropriately. Mahatma Gandhi was the primary leader of India’s independence movement and he was the architect of non-violent civil disobedience that influenced the world. Gandhi grew up worshiping the houdini god. He was a shy and unremarkable student. At the age of 18 Gandhi moved to London, England to study law. He returned to India in 1891. Gandhi decided to go to South Africa in 1893. He was quickly appalled by the discrimination and racial segregation. Gandhi was a spiritual leader in protesting. Gandhi would do his protest by doing a fast for 3 or more weeks. I think Madeleine L’engle choose Mahatma Gandhi because he fought for what he believed.

The topic for my research paper is about how Gandhi freed India from British rule. Gandhi stood up for what he believed in and got what he wanted without resorting to violence. Gandhi was a civil leader, who rose to power by raising his voice against the unfair policies the British declared. Gandhi and his tactics of nonviolence had a huge impact on the world, for decades people were influenced by his methods and followed his practice of nonviolence. Gandhi freed India from British rule allowing India to become an independent country. Gandhi was the true hero for India in its time of need.

Mahatma Gandhi is most known for working for independence in India. He is seen as the father of the nation in India. He was born on October 2, 1869 and was killed by a fanatic in 1948. He made many contributions to the world.

In 1999 Time Magazine conducted a survey about who their readers considered “the Man of the Twentieth Century,” and although Gandhi came in a close second behind Albert Einstein he was still one of the greatest men of the twentieth century. Gandhi’s teachings changed the way people around the world though, it opened them up to a moral-political world. His ability to overcome the British and win independence for India, all with nonviolent resistance, continue to be an inspiration to people around the world even years after his death (Prabhu, J. 2001).
