Film: Inherit the Wind

General observations: The opening scene of the film shows a high school teacher, Cate, teaching Darwin’s theory of evolution. The film is set in a small town called Hillsboro. Since evolution in a new theory, people didn’t want to accept this new change especially because it conflicts with what they are taught. People in town doesn’t want outsiders to tell them what to think and in this case, Henry Drummond is. Cate was arrested or teaching evolution, which is against with what is taught in the bible. Thus, people were categorized into “man of god” and evolutionist. It is difficult for the people to believe that humans, such great and superior beings, evolved from a less developed specie like apes. One quote I remembered was “atheist, go back to apes” and “if we believe we descend from a beast, we must remain a beast.” It is disappointing to see how stubborn and narrow-minded people used to be. The film portrays a story of a high school teacher who is arrested because he taught the theory of evolution in his biology class which denies the god’s creation as stated in the bible. Thus, this event brings up the issue that evolutionists are questioning the bible, god and Christianity which is a big part in people lives during that time in the United States. It is questioning the sources for the origin of specie and humans. The teacher is simply sharing his knowledge from what he read in the book written by Charles Darwin to give his students more options to think about. This controversy raises questions like: whether it is okay for people to think differently? What is more important, science or religion? To what extent should we believe in religion? Who decides on the law and when can the law be wrong? To what extent is ethicality used in the law? and can we disobey the law for future benefits of the
