Black Lives Matter – The Injustice of our Present Society “Black Lives Matter” is a contemporary movement that was designed to break racist police violence. The name of the organization itself had the ability to direct so much with just a few words; which shows that the directive that the movement is trying to present needs to be affirmed. The movement started as a small but brutal dissent in a St. Louis suburb that had broken out into a conflagration that has consumed all of America. The “Black Lives Matter” movement has compassed something in our time that is rare to us such as: avoiding the authority of our country’s commanding inauguration. Neither law enforcement nor Democrats were capable enough to bar the movement; which has bewildered
Subsequent police shootings of unarmed black locals in New York, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles propelled the “Black Lives Matter” movement.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s effective policy of non-violence. Furthermore, the “Black Lives Matter” movement’s disruptive protest and impassionate public mission statement speeches about the persistent purpose of racial inequality have been disconcerting to many Americans who wonder what the real message for this new generation of civil rights protests are, and if their arguments, tactics, and cause is effective and productive to inciting change. To many times their stances have appeared contradictory and hate filled because of their lack of specific purpose and a central governing body. Responding to this criticism, Black Lives Matter leaders assert this is, “not your grandfather’s civil-rights movement,” to distinguish its tactics and its philosophy from those of nineteen-sixties-style activism. However, despite insinuating they are not typical of older civil rights movements they frequently allude to past civil rights
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a loosely‐coordinated, nationwide movement dedicated to ending police brutality that rose to prominence in late 2014. It takes its name from a hashtag started by three Black feminist activists Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi but the movement and the hashtag are not identical (Freelon, McIlwain, & Clark, 2016). BLM has achieved national reputation through their online and offline organizing, obtaining extensive news media coverage and glowing references in music and entertainment television. Based on a horrendous incident that sparked a concern for a lot of Black people across the world, the sudden need for a social movement was born called BLM. Black Lives Matter is a national organization working for the validity of Black life and also working to rebuild the Black liberation movement. Black Lives Matter broadens the conversation and highlight the incidents around state violence to include the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. This referring to the ways in which Black lives are deprived of basic human rights and dignity. According to the article The Murder of Walter Scott, which talks about race and class, “African Americans are less than 13% of the U.S. population yet they are nearly 50% of those killed by the police. North Charleston has a population of 104,000, 47% Black and the police force is 80% white (Miah, 2015)”.
First, I will begin with the comparison of “Black Lives Matter” and Martin Luther King. Black Lives Matter’s goal is to build local power and to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. However, these protest in the name of Black Lives Matter have turned inherently violent. Whether it is the fault of themselves or others, they are tending to meet dislike with violence and destruction.
2016 has not reached the end of its year, and yet there is already an accumulation of controversy questioning modern movements' civility in today's society. Undoubtedly the most popularly controversial of all modern movements, however, is the Black Lives Matter movement. While they are a vocal group advocating against police brutality in concern of the well-being for fellow African Americans, their reputation does not exactly agree with this ideal. In other words, their methods of advocating appears to be rather aggressive, which especially targets police officers. Civility has become an alarmingly nonexistent concept in modern movements, and the Black Lives Matter must bring civility in order to save their purpose, as well as their reasoning
Darryl Lorenzo Wellington, a renowned poet and social critic, originally published the article “The Power of Black Lives Matter” in his book The Crisis in 2015. In “The Power of Black Lives Matter,” Darryl Lorenzo Wellington argues that the Black Lives Matter movement has helped bring to the forefront the uncomfortable truth about race and class in the United States of America. He makes it clear that racism is still present in today’s society and that the movement Black Lives Matter will help make this problem more noticeable. In the essay “The Power of Black Lives Matter”, Wellington is trying to persuade the reader that Black Lives Matter is a necessary movement because it reiterates the truth that the society we live in today is systematically racist, he does so through rhetorical questions and repetition which is why I believe this article is persuasive.
These three things all contribute to the change we want to see in society. Currently, The Black Lives Matter movement is at the point of causing civil disobedience, which is used to gain the attention of the media, politicians and the nation as a whole. The movement works at different levels with the hopes of making changes in society which in turn would promote equality within the criminal justice system. Leaders of Black Lives Matter understand how the general population’s beliefs about crime and racism acts as an antagonist to any sort of reform to lower racial discrepancies, due to this they are trying to emphasize how race does matter in both the criminal justice system and society through the means of protests. The 23 active Black Lives Matter chapters across the United States are staging demonstrations in order to get society to acknowledge that there is a problem, and once people begin to listen, there can be legal challenges and new laws that work to influence a societal change. On August 28th, 2014 during Labor Day weekend supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement from around the nation set out to participate in a Black Lives Matter Freedom Ride. This protest, based off of the 1960s Freedom Riders, brought people to Ferguson, MO, the city where Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson. Naturally this
Outraged at the seemingly sudden outbreak of police brutality against minorities, Black Lives Matter has staged many protests and often blocked public roads in a manner similar to the civil right’s activists of the 1960s in that they use the same set of rights protected under the Constitution’s Bill of Rights. Some might claim that Black Lives Matter is a negative influence on society as it is associated with several riots which utterly disrupted society. However, Black Lives Matter did not intentionally incite these riots and did not condone them after they occurred. Through their efforts, Black Lives Matter has positively affected society by holding police more accountable through changes they advocated such as the use of body cameras, helping to improve the relations between the police and
In summation, we looked at social conflict as it related to class, race and ethnicity, gender, and how it explains the Black Lives Matter Movement. As we examined the literature, we asked how and why did the Black Lives Matter Movement begin? What are the problems with the Black Lives Matter Movement? What does social media have to say about the Black Lives Matter Movement? What is the youth’s culture’s input on the Black Lives Matter Movement? How does the Black Lives Matter movement tie back to the police? And where are we going with the Black Lives Matter Movement post-2016? We focused on whether or not the Black Lives Matter movement had the potential to affect change and have a long-lasting impact on society as a social movement. Therefore,
“Black Lives Matter” —an intended progression in society without a hierarchy, merely marching forward by spur of the people. Started by three sisters who continue to keep the organization a chapter-based, left wing social justice operation, it can best be described as “Not a moment, but a movement” by those that follow it. The case that began this outcry involved a man —George Zimmerman— whom, according to Lizette Alvarez and Cara Buckley (2013), “was found not guilty [of] second-degree murder [and] was also acquitted of manslaughter, a lesser charge.” (para. 1). Since its initial start in 2013, the movement follows and protests against police brutality and civil injustice towards individuals of the Black minority; however, this is a prime example of hate breeding hate as the movement, has opened a new floodgate full of antipathy aimed towards the White-community and Law Enforcement Officials. In short, the initial idea of “Black Lives Matter” —which is to bring civil justice to the Black-community— is a good concept, but the execution by its adherents are, ironically, bigoted; the movement needs to either evolve its state of thought or disperse before it further segregates America.
Even though America is the world dominating superpower and is known to intervene on behalf of the violation of human rights internationally, it fails to acknowledge and correct the flaws its legal and justice system present against its own citizens. African Americans have long been targeted by the police force and have been oppressed by the government before, as we are familiar with the Civil Rights Movement that occurred in 1955 due to segregation and discrimination. The system has justified racial profiling, specifically against African Americans, and granted those with authority the right to incarcerate or punish those they deem dangerous. The actions of the American government have given way to the increase incarceration of African Americans and have allowed white privilege to prevail in the justice system. The social movement Black Lives Matter, although recently acknowledged or recognized, is not based on a new issue but rather an old issue that is quickly reviving due to the injustices Black Americans are facing. In short, social movements are known as politics through other means. They occur when people take to the streets in order to have their voices heard by authority and feel as if they are unable to
For decades black Americans have been treated as animals, looked at as if they are monsters, and killed like bugs. Actions like Police brutality and racism is what caused Black Lives Matter. The creation of the Black Lives Matter was a response by the black community to give a voice to black Americans affected by the increase of wrongful deaths due to the law enforcements and vigilantes across the country. This has been going on for so long that it seems like we are stuck in the past. For years, even decades black Americans have had to live the struggle of being equal. Even when things are going good and we think we finally have the same rights, something happened to change that. It is time to shed a light on the real purpose of Black Lives Matter and why they are important to today's society.
The controversy surrounding Black Lives Matter has been ongoing for some time now, but the intensity has be increased over the last few years. Many people support the Black Lives Matter movement and agrees with what it represent for the lives that have been taken and the family that are yet and still dealing with the aftermath. When discussing the movement many people have felt offended with the phrase Black Lives Matter because they feel that all lives matter. It is clear that the statement is true but there are certain problems that are happening within the African American communities that are not relatable with other communities. According to “The Washington Post,” a black person is killed extrajudicially every 28 hours, and Black men between the ages nineteen and twenty-five are the group most at risk to be gunned down by police. Therefore, the criticisms towards the Black Lives Matter movement should stop because it doesn’t single out the fact that all lives matter but focuses on the injustice done to African Americans.
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement that started within the African-American communities. This movement is organized by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. Ever since the black people have stepped on American soil, they have continued to be victims of racism and violence. From slavery to lynching to segregation, the black people have suffered alot in this country.
