Innovation is the driving force of America: advancing knowledge, generating products and processes that all contribute to the nation’s standard of living, health and safety (Committee on Research Universities, Board on Higher Education and Workforce, Policy & Global Affairs, and National Research Council. (2012). It took nearly 300 years after the first American University was established before research was proposed, today, research serves an essential role in the university system. Research is performed in a variety of methods and exists across all educational fields across the university and the benefits of research abound not only for students, but for university faculty and the nation as a whole. Although undergraduate research is viewed as a relatively new initiative in the university, students have been researching at this level longer than we think: since around the early 1900s.
Background
Albert Einstein is quoted as saying “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” Questions proliferate in everyday thought. These questions, no matter the context, can be considered the first step of research. Asking questions, developing a method, and discovering answers are the basis of research. Research has been defined repeatedly throughout history; nevertheless to this day different disciplines define it in a variety of ways. Oftentimes research is assumed synonymous with science, such as the definition provided by the American
Research can be used in many methods, for example: questionnaires, television, leaflets, books etc. it allows us to keep up to date on the new findings or discoveries e.g. a new type of cancer or a new vaccination. Research is the investigation into
WHAT IS RESEARCH? It is a planned process whereby information is collected for a specific purpose, analysed and reported.
Research is vital in understanding why certain theories are conceived. Essentially, through research I am studying human life and more so studying human
According to Depoy and Gittin, research is a way individuals think about problems in systematic way. Research is generally described as description, exploration, analysis, prediction and problem solving. There are different types of research and these researches are called the experiments, quasi-experiments and non-experiments. The purpose of research is to provide the insight to practice, it also enhance individuals understanding as well as developing new approaches with different topics, get to test your research for effectiveness. Understanding research is important because it helps to build individuals knowledge bases and informs decision making in practice. Research also enable us to make sure that our practice are up to date with relevant information.
Undoubtedly, humanity and modern civilization would have never reached their current form with the research. Research is the key element behind any type of evolution and progress. Contemporary, broadly established theories, varying from the understanding of the universe to the revelation of human evolution, are the result of valuable innovations in different fields of science and technology. Every day life has been simplified due to the constant advance of knowledge and discoveries. However, none of this would be possible without constant research. Therefore, and since research is vital to the development of human civilization, the need to augment and supplement current research methods has become apparent. Even though research outcomes
Research allows us to better understand what is unknown, how a human thinks, why a dog barks when they hear a stranger approaching or that the earth is round and not flat. Research allows us to find answers to the questions we have. Research attempts to both understand and define. There are three kinds of research; Explanatory; Exploratory and Descriptive research. Explanatory, Exploratory and Descriptive research define what research is; Research is the attempt to explain, explore and describe (Neuman, 2006, 24).
Research is primarily an investigation. Researchers and scientists gather data, facts, and knowledge to help better understand phenomenon, events and people. Through research, analysis, investigations, and experimentation, we gain a better understanding of our world. As I skimmed the text to find a definition, I found the word research several times on several of the pages in the first chapter. Research is fundamental to any scientific enterprise and statistics is no exception.
Questions occur about the definition of research because it has been said that “every business issue
Over the course of the past 250 years, the United States has proven that it is a world leader. It has shown that all you need in order to make something great of your life is grit, spit, and determination. Decade after decade, century after century, America has continually astounded the international community with its creative and forward-thinking might. With many of the most commonly used pieces of technology having their origins in the United States, it is safe to say that every generation of America has changed the world with their brilliant minds.
Research is a time consuming method of collectively gathering information in order to provide the best solution for a problem or the best method of practice available. Research can certainly be seen as a process of trial and error, it is often undertaken by specialised practitioners in their areas of practice. It is a long, rigorous process of consistently gathering information to analyse. It is frequently gathered through the use of structured questions and through in-depth observations of people and their actions and reactions to certain stimulants. Research is seen to be the most difficult obstacle to overcome in order to achieve a renowned professional status and to provide a high
What I have learned about research at an introductory level is that research is finding out about things we do not
Further methods of keeping readers attached to the paper included the introduction of the two hotlines that served to the queries of readers.
Research is a form of systematic inquiry. It sets out to answer questions through assessing, summarizing and drawing conclusions from what are often very large amounts of information.
What I have learned about research is that it is a process, a scientific process that psychologist and scientist develop that includes many different approaches and that is carefully peer reviewed and evaluated. There is what is called the Scientific Approach where scientist have an idea or theory and based on their observation will either support the theory or the theory can be falsified by their peers. Data also goes through a review period before it is published in a scientific journal by scientist who have the knowledge and expertise to evaluate it.
While trying to define what research really is, it proves itself to be a very broad and open concept (Shuttleworth, 2008). Shuttleworth (2008) says, “…the definition of research includes any gathering of data, information and facts for the advancement of knowledge.” (p. 1). Things like reading books, surfing the web, and watching the news are all forms of research (Shuttleworth, 2008). On the other hand, the scientific definition for research is more planned and concise (Shuttleworth, 2008). Research within science involves solving and or answering a specific problem (Shuttleworth, 2008).
