Program Design and Development Inpatient Family Services (IFS) will offer families with inpatient members, assistance, resources and support for navigating the inpatient mental health system. Family members who contact IFS will receive assistance with general information and questions regarding our services, and other resources which pertain to the inpatient mental health system. The information provided may include, but is not limited to, the following: information on hospitals and IMD facilities, questions regarding courses offered by IFS and outside resources, information on transportation to facilities, and information on support groups. IFS will offer module courses which address the 15 principles in working with families of persons who have a mental illness (Dixion et al., 2001). This course will be taught by a staff member and a family and/or consumer partner who are familiar with the policies and procedures for visitations at each facility. A staff member, family and/or consumer partner, will share their personal experiences and facilitate questions pertaining to facility visits and inpatient family transportation. Within this module family members will have the opportunity to connect with other families and schedule IMD visits utilizing the inpatient family transportation.
Information and support will be provided to assist family members in keeping the family unit intact. This module will help the family in building communication skills, addressing acceptance and understanding of mental illness, facing the feelings of loss, and learning how to support a loved during hospitalization.
