Insanity And Madness In Shakespeare's Hamlet

The recurring theme of insanity and madness in William Shakespeare's Hamlet causes characters` minds to become skewed, and this impacts the way each person thinks and ultimately the way decisions are made. There is not only the mad as in angry, but also the mental state (insanity). The fact that almost all characters are mad at some point shows how madness driven this play really is, and how much emotions can control everyone regardless of their normal mental state. Since the mental state of the characters in Hamlet is constantly changing, each character's view on themselves and others also change. Sometimes the reasons for being mad change, “O, my prophetic soul! My uncle!” (1.5.48) is when Hamlet discovers from the ghost of his father that his uncle is the cause of his father’s death, and this causes his first bout of madness. His reason for being mad changes; “I did repel his letters and denied his access to me. That hath made him mad” (2.2.121-123), he becomes mad because Ophelia has not contacted him, and is now beginning to act mentally insane. This is important to notice because Hamlet very quickly goes from completely ready to avenge his father, to being so mentally incapable of even functioning correctly due to the absence of Ophelia. Sometimes, the feelings of madness don’t change, but rather who they are felt towards. This happens with Laertes after his father’s murder; “And, like the kind life-rend’ring pelican, Repast them with my blood” (4.5.168-169) and “To cut his throat i’ th’ church” (4.7.144), which is when he is told by king Claudius that Hamlet is to blame for his father’s death. Immediately after this his madness becomes fueled by Hamlet’s actions. These changes in feelings between characters show how a single person’s feelings may change at any given minute, and the person’s usual way of making decisions is changed.
