Food insecurity can be defined as the lack of access to adequate food, limited by money and other resources. Guatemalan people are unfortunately a perfect example of people living with food insecurities. With majority of the population living in poverty and the country as a whole often experiencing draught and less than ideal weather conditions, many adults and children are malnourished and the children are mostly stunted. Guatemala is currently facing a interesting malnutrition problem. Malnutrition in Guatemala is affecting localized farmers outside of the city. The availability and access to food is affected by things like drought. If there isn't rain to make the crops grow then there won't be any product to sell which mean the families will not have an income to supply food their children. Drought would mean that there is no food available to the people of Guatemala and, because they are a mostly poor people, they do not have the money to have access to food in parts of the country that didn't experience drought and had a successful growing season. The utilization of food is affected by poverty and climate change. If the families are already at or below the poverty line, the way they distribute, or utilize, the little food they have amongst their family will change. They will most likely use what little they have very sparingly in an attempt to make it last longer in hopes that over time they can obtain more food. The stability will be affected by these same factors because stability is the combination of the other 3 factors . An unstable climate doesn't allow for successful growing seasons, which leads to a lack of availability and access to the food. Food insecurity is a term that was introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA labels the insecurity based on the severity with four different groups. One group is the Low Food Security; which means low quality, desirability or variety but no or little reduction of food. Very Low Food Security is reduced food intake and multiple disruptions of eating patterns. The opposite spectrum is High Food Security. This is no food limitations or no issues accessing food. Marginal food security is sufficient supply of food with some concern of ability to supply. Food insecurity refers to “the lack of adequate, nutritious, and safe foods, typically due to financial resource constraints” (Bickel, et al. 43). Food insecurity is not associated with the overall diet quality. Envision not knowing when or where the next meal will be coming from. “Improving household food security is a chance for society to help enhance the outcome of families that struggle with food insecurities.”
The availability of food is based on the amount and quality of the food produced. The DRC agricultural industry supports ⅔ of the population, and is split into two sectors: subsistence and commercial.
