Insecurity In Guatemala

Food insecurity can be defined as the lack of access to adequate food, limited by money and other resources. Guatemalan people are unfortunately a perfect example of people living with food insecurities. With majority of the population living in poverty and the country as a whole often experiencing draught and less than ideal weather conditions, many adults and children are malnourished and the children are mostly stunted. Guatemala is currently facing a interesting malnutrition problem. Malnutrition in Guatemala is affecting localized farmers outside of the city. The availability and access to food is affected by things like drought. If there isn't rain to make the crops grow then there won't be any product to sell which mean the families will not have an income to supply food their children. Drought would mean that there is no food available to the people of Guatemala and, because they are a mostly poor people, they do not have the money to have access to food in parts of the country that didn't experience drought and had a successful growing season. The utilization of food is affected by poverty and climate change. If the families are already at or below the poverty line, the way they distribute, or utilize, the little food they have amongst their family will change. They will most likely use what little they have very sparingly in an attempt to make it last longer in hopes that over time they can obtain more food. The stability will be affected by these same factors because stability is the combination of the other 3 factors . An unstable climate doesn't allow for successful growing seasons, which leads to a lack of availability and access to the food. Not having any crops to harvest, export and eat will change the way food is utilized by each family. All of these dimensions being affected leads to a lack of stability in food security. The families can never know for sure when or where their next meal will
