Home does not necessarily have to be a house, but can be a person, or somewhere you find comfort. Refugees are faced with many hardships while frantically trying to leave their war-torn countries, and adapt into their new homes. Ha, the main character in the novel “Inside out & Back again,” by Thanhha Lai, is an ideal example of the difficulties refugees must face as they struggle through danger, starvation, rejection, and uncertainty of the future. One of the many challenges refugees face while fleeing home is danger. “All lights are off so the port will not be a target..The commander ordered everyone below deck…” This illustrates that Ha and everyone on that ship faced the possibility of death because the communists could have found the ship and bombed it. “A total of 706 drowned trying to cross the Aegean to Greece and 72 died trying to reach Spain.” (Associated Press, 1) This indicates that there are many dangers and fatalities that refugees face, but they were so desperate to flee their war-torn country that they risked everything and gave it their all. As the text states, “The commander decides the ration is now half a clump of rice only at morning and night, and one cup of water all day.” This aforementioned quote indicates that the refugee ship missed the rescue ship, so they must preserve their resources by giving less food to the refugees, causing many to starve. Additionally, the text states, “More than 1 million people driven out of their countries by war, poverty, and persecution entered Europe this year, migration experts said tuesday.” (Associated Press) This indicates that these refugees are poor from the war, and can barely afford food, so they must leave for a better
