Thanksgiving dinner can be fun and nerve-wracking, especially when a long trip is involved. It is the perfect excuse to miss work or school and to run away from any responsibilities. The outer world is exposed and the exposure is a breath of fresh air compared to confines of home. As a valet driver in Nashville working seven days a week, it is a blessing to have time off and to spend that time wisely. Every year, the Thanksgiving road trip consists of music playing, large sodas and bags of chips within reach, and keeping an eye peeled of any interesting stops along the way. Hunger will set in soon if the human body is only running on chips and soda, thankfully Thanksgiving dinner is only 120 miles away! The trip is bound to be fun, but as the destination gets closer, anxiety sets in about the quality of the food and what memories will be created this year.
Most drivers going from Nashville to Jackson, Tennessee, it is conventional wisdom to take Interstate 40 the whole way.

Being the two most popular options in the family, it is bound to run out quick and must be a priority! The mashed potatoes at first glance looked amazing, and in past years, the family had a big reputation for having the best mashed potatoes. This year’s potatoes lack the right amount of buttery and salty goodness. The texture of the potatoes is clumpy where it is supposed to be smooth and rich. Another anomaly includes the lack of yellow, specifically macaroni and cheese, an important staple of Thanksgiving dinner. The cause of the lackluster options at the dinner table is the absence of a few family members. The collective spirit that resides within the family during the holiday cooking was not at its full potential this year. This brings up questions about the quality of future dinners and how the family can be brought closer
We had a fast trip down to Mississippi to visit with Dad & Kay. With all the storms blowing through, we managed to evade them all thankfully. We did have sunny skies on Friday & Monday. And the little Miata just hummed along. We took the top down Friday after we left Hopkinsville KY. Getting off the Pennyrile Pkwy and onto I-24 for a bit, traffic became quite heavy heading into Nashville, so we got off the interstate and cut across the countryside to the far edge of Nashville. Once on the southwest side of Nashville and the beginning of the Natchez Trace Parkway we stopped at the infamous Loveless Cafe before driving the Natchez Trace. We thought we'd just sit down, have a meal and drive on.....uh no, 1 1/2 hr wait, the place was packed with people there to eat smoked BBQ sandwiches. In the next building over, they sold sandwiches to go, so that is what we did, sort of. We found some chairs outside in the shade, ate our meal. The Natchez Trace is a destination drive within itself, maintained by the National Park Service, it is a beautiful drive with lots of places to pull off, hike, see waterfalls, vistas, etc.....none of which we did :-)

Road trips with the family weren’t always fun and exciting. Sometimes they could get very irritating. For instance, I remember the time when my family and I went to Indiana for Carter’s Hoop Shoot Regional Final. When we were finally about two hours away from our destination, the transmission on my mom’s GMC Acadia stopped working completely. As a result, we had to pay around 4,000 dollars to get it fixed and had to wait an extra couple days after the Hoop Shoot so it could get fixed. That trip was very stressful and made everything we did harder and a lot more frustrating.
Hot chicken, hot anything is not cool. Personally, to me, I would never just visit Nashville, Tennessee for some wrongly seasoned meat, maybe I’m cockamamie. But if I were to go along on this silly trip, I can think of a few people I would bring. First, I would bring my mother, Keri, just hearing her reaction to such a place would be priceless. Second, I would bring my boyfriend, Tobias, he is always telling me how he enjoys hot and spicy foods. Honestly, I would just order it without telling him what it is, and sit back and enjoy the show. So, road trip it is.
Early one November morning a woman stared at me with utter disbelief, tears of gratitude streaming down her cheeks."Thank you," she mouthed silently to me, clutching her son to her chest. I was proud knowing that, because of my efforts, her family and many more who struggle with poverty would be able to share a Thanksgiving meal. I knew that many children in my community would not be able to celebrate the holiday as others might because their parents could not afford to buy food items, and so as Vice President of a community service club called Interact, I was inspired to provide these children with a Thanksgiving dinner. The club officers and I sat crowded around our adviser's desk brainstorming how we would collect ingredients. We decided
We also had the chance to do some shopping before leaving and to me, that was the highlight of my trip. The Nashville mall was so big it man little Augusta, Ga mall look like a broom closet. In the mall I stopped at a shoe store, where I bought some sandals I had been wanting for the longest but could never find in the mall at home. The trip was very rewarding to me because I got a chance to spend quality time with a part of my family that I only get the chance to see during the Holidays. The trip brought a lifetime of memories that I will never forget. We ended our trip with a birthday celebration for my two nieces whose birthdays were a few days apart. The colorful pink party for the girls included; crown shaped cake, ice-cream, and lots of smiles from the two birthday girls. Furthermore, the three-day trip was over and it was back to the hotel to pack for the drive home. The drive home needless to say was not very exciting. I would have loved to stay in Nashville visiting my aunt for a few more days I was happy to be home. My family does not get together that often, we are a happy family but we also have our differences like any other
Most people have the custom of buying a turkey for thanksgiving. “46 million turkeys are eaten each Thanksgiving” (Turkey for the Holidays). Traditionally, people eat an abundance of food resembling the pilgrims and how they had a feast based on their religion. Furthermore, there are many different varieties of food such as: turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, and dinner rolls. For dessert there is pumpkin, apple, and pecan pie. Most of the time the food is extraordinary people just want more. They might even take some and have it again later on. Thanksgiving is a feast we are blessed to
Which is a lot of people to feed. But normally not all 140 people will like the same food that's why they had a bunch of stuff right? No they did not back then they only had squash, berries and pumpkin, and ham. Which does seem pretty good but not all 140 people would probably like that. But now in days you go to a thanksgiving and there is so many choices it's not even funny. Ham,turkey, rolls, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and so many more. Thanksgiving dinners have changed so much by how much food there is and what types of food there
Anyone can eat soul food on any particular day of the year. However, it is something distinctive about preparing and eating soul food on Thanksgiving Day. Soul food is considered to be fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, breaded fried okra and yams. The preparation and consumption of soul food have been a staple in my family’s tradition for many generations. Perchance the food tastes better because of the cool crisp air, or maybe it’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. I honestly don’t know why, but I feel like this should be a paten scientific theory. Everything just feels right on this day, as if the world halts for a split second and it is at harmony. Possibly that is why the food is cooked to perfection. Even the process of preparing the meal is practically better than eating the food.
Did you know that 46.3 million Americans will be traveling for Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is widely celebrated, and it is celebrated in many different ways. Some people travel, some people play games, and some people go out to restaurants. We all have different family traditions, and even though most people celebrate for the same reason, the ways they are carried out differ greatly, especially in traveling, food, and activities. Like many of my peers, I do not travel for Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate our joys with friends and family. Unfortunately, if you are the person designated to cooking the holiday dinner, the joys can turn into complete and total fear. I'll never forget the first time I made Thanksgiving dinner for twenty family members and friends. I waited until the last minute to start and the dinner ended in a complete disaster. In the years following that failure, I have learned that preparing a Thanksgiving dinner is easy...if you plan ahead.
One thing that is similar to my thanksgiving that some people also have is the food.
The Kim’s family story about their Thanksgiving trip during winter weather was truly tragic. They made a decision to take a road trip under harsh weather conditions with limited amount of food and gas. They missed their exit, and decided to take an unknown, dangerous route where they got stuck for nine days. In my opinion, the moral of the story is to plan and prepare for a road trip especially under inclement weather. It’s essential to carry an emergency kit, extra food, water, and clothing in case one gets stuck due to poor road conditions. Prior to starting a road trip, it’s important to know about the weather conditions and travel advisories on the area. Family members should know the route of the planned trip. The vehicle must have a full tank of gas, and be in good mechanical condition to withstand a road trip under harsh weather. Most importantly, we should pay attention to warning signs such as fatigue, fuel levels and bad road conditions to stop, and reconvene the trip when it’s safe to travel to our final destination.
The State Fair of Texas has been a family tradition for me and my family for many years but this year I was able to pass the tradition on to my friends. The State Fair of Texas is in Dallas Texas at Fair Park and consists of multiple rides and food and most importantly the famous Ferris wheel. One of my favorite parts of the fair is all of the amazing and different kinds foods they have available to try. The people who came with me were some of my friends from college, some of which who have been to the fair and some who have never been. Another fun part of that day was the drive up to the fair and back to Waco. I was the one who was driving the car so that always comes with its perks and responsibilities, still the drive still consisted of much enjoyment and laughter. A good road trip to the fair with friends needs to bring everyone closer, cause a great amount of joy or happiness and laughter, and must be with a great group of friends. My recent trip to the state fair with my friends is the perfect example of a road trip with friends due to all of us becoming a lot closer to each other, the great enjoyment and happiness of our group of friends, and the group of friends that made it such an amazing and unforgettable trip.
Never have I taken the time to think of the significance of the kitchen table in my life, but I have come to realize that my kitchen table has always been a place to unwind and share with my family members. From childhood to my adult hood, I have always come to the kitchen table in celebration, conference, in search of security, and enjoyment. The kitchen table of the past always brought my family together, and the table in my present brings focus to my school work and an occasional “catch up” conversation with my family, and in the future I hope to have a similar kitchen table setting as I did in my childhood, but with my own style.
