The human species is ever changing. At no period is this change more prevalent than in childhood. From the moment of conception, children will progress through the five stages of development, prenatal, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence until they reach full maturation know as adulthood. (Lightfoot, Cole and Cole, 2013)
Within each of these stages there are four domains that categorize cognitive, physical, social and emotional development. (Lightfoot. et.al. 2013) All children will progress through these stages, however, there are many unique factors that interact with a child to individualize

Students were participating in pep rally where they could be observed cheering, dancing, hopping around and physically active. Coordination of different movements at the same time is typical for this age. (HealthyChildren.org, 2015) Children are gaining more control over their movements. Children at this age are expected to walk heel to toe, balance, jump rope, and stand or hop on one foot. (HealthyChildren.org, 2015) The children at the center demonstrated appropriate fine motor skills as they completed class activities. Children were observed cutting with scissors, using a tripod grip to hold a writing instrument, manipulating tools and materials, using a dominant hand. (Ellis, 2010.) Self-care especially in the area of toileting is expected at this stage. While this skill set was not observed, there were not any indicators from the children that they needed assistance in toileting. Lack of complete self-care can be an area of developmental concern for children with delays attending an inclusive educational …show more content…
What makes individual humans different from other members of our species will continue to be studied and debated. New technology, like MRI imagining of the brain, has shed new light on Grand Theories of Development, supporting some and rethinking our thoughts on others. It is critical to our society and across cultures to continue attempts to understand how our cognitive, physical, social and emotional domains can be developed to their maximum potential. Not only will it benefit how we approach nurturing, teaching, and enriching our children but will benefit the future of the human
Explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development from birth – 19 years
All children and young people develop at different rates, but the order which they advance in differs very little. Children’s development tends to progress from head to toe, inner to outer, from simple to complex and from general to specific.
The field of study that examines patterns of growth, change, and stability in behavior that occur throughout the entire lifespan is called lifespan development. Lifespan development takes a scientific approach in its study of growth, change, and stability. This development emphases on human development. Developmentalists study the course of development in nonhuman species, the most popular examine growth and change in people. In contrast I will focus on the ways people and myself change and grow during our lives, with the consideration of stability in our live span. Together, these findings suggest that we will go through
Different researchers have different opinion about how children develop through various stages of development. Some of them are of the opinion that children’s development are continuous and rapid while others are of the opinion that there are different stages of development and that each stage is stable just for a period of time.
The early stage of life, the childhood years, is the most important stage of a
Our textbook further describes that between the stages of infancy to adulthood there are three things that
The difference between sequence of development and rate of development is that a sequence of development is the order in which the development of a child will occur. The rate of development is in which speed/ time this development would happen. Child development experts have carried out a lot of research on young children to work out what most children can do at different ages and the rate at which they grow. From this research, milestones have been identified. A ‘milestone of development’ refers to the age at which most children should have reached a certain stage of development. We think about stages and sequences of development in stages:
As children move from adolescence to young adulthood, they encounter dramatic physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes. Developmental transitions, such as puberty and increasing
Observer visited a play place of a restaurant in New Jersey, Hackensack. Why I have chosen the place is easy to observe every part of child development such as cognitive, social emotional, language as well as physical at the same time. Observer performed the observation on April 28 from 1 pm to 3pm. The child was an Asian boy. He has strait short black hair with dark brown eyes and thin black eye brows. His height looked around 37 inches that he may be a little smaller than other early childhood children. He looks thin and has a full set of teeth inside his mouth, full cheeks, and a small button nose.
At conception, the treatment and nurturing of a child can play a role in the development of the brain and can cause a lasting effect on a child through adulthood. The most formative years of a child are from birth to age 5. About 90 percent of a child 's brain develops in that time, according to studies (Mackenzie, 2008). And 85 percent of a child 's intellect, personality, and social skills are developed by that age (Mackenzie, 2008). A child’s brain function develops at different times for each child. Children grow and mature at different stages.
One precious little girl, charming responses, and thirty well spent minutes adds up to a successful Piaget project. The time spent on interviewing a child for cognitive development was insightful, and gave me a first hand look at how a child’s mind matures with age.
An activity that I feel illustrates the interrelatedness of the three domains of development is when the children were asked to follow the leader and had all the children; walk, jump, gallop, and tip toe. The child used the physical domain of development by doing the activities of walking, jumping, galloping, and tip toeing. The child used the cognitive and language developmental domain by listening and understanding the teachers and doing the activity accordingly. The last domain of social and emotional developmental domain was met when the children had a chance to laugh when seeing others doing the same activities. It intertwines with all three domains by the way that a child could physically do the activities, create a language by understanding
I possess a knowledge of childhood development skills through previous leadership positions and work experience. I also have the ability to conduct interviews, communicate successfully in and outside of professional settings and also organize and maintain a high workload effectively. Furthermore, my resiliency and drive in my pursuit of results. I am also a critical thinker and this has helped me foster both personal and interpersonal relationships with the children I work with and my employers. These are attributes among others that I learned and improved upon this past year as an AmeriCorps member, working as a teaching assistant in Bridgeport Connecticut have reinforced my willingness to serve the disadvantaged and
All of the developmental domains are important in a child’s life. They might not know it or understand it but
Physical development refers to physical body changes. It occurs in a relatively stable, predictable sequence. Motor developmental theories provide insights into how children grow and learn. Theories are helpful for understanding and guiding developmental processes. The principle of the maturation theory is growth and development occurs in orderly stages and sequence, that is, certain skills and abilities generally occur before other milestones are reached. For example, most infants learn to crawl before they learn to walk. However, it is also important to realize that the rate at which these milestones are reached can vary. Some children learn to walk earlier than their same-age peers, while others may take a bit longer
