Intellectual Pride: The Seven Deadly Sins

First Example where hubris is being shown is when the Hurricane had come and Tea cake beforehand had said that there was no Hurricane coming and that they should not worry about anything. However when the Hurricane had come Tea cake started to feel bad about not listening to Janie and started to apologize to her. He said “"Ah reckon you wish now you had of stayed in yo' big house 'way from such as dis, don't yuh?" (159). He said this because he thought that maybe Janie might be regretting the fact of marrying him, since she already had a house and was from a higher class than what he was.

In “7 Ways We Lie”, Riley Redgates wrote in seven high schoolers point of view, switching in between chapters, from person to person. Each of these seven characters had a one of the seven deadly sins, lust, envy, greed, sloth, gluttony, wrath, or pride.

People have and always will live with these “sins” like jealousy, selfishness, and peer pressure. For examples my cousin got jealous of how

The definition of arrogance is overbearing pride. I see arrogance almost everywhere I go: the store, church, school, and on the street. Arrogance could be disguised as self reliance, but you need to be able to know when you need help, and be able to accept it. Those who do not accept help and are too arrogant, which is a sin. Many of the Greek myths, some of my family members, and myself sometimes have arrogance.

These are three of the bible’s seven deadly sins that are ingrained in our society. Sins that our heroes are still fighting today.

The cardinal sins are “sins that characterize fallen humanity,” according to orthodox Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church in particular (ReligionFacts). While the Bible does include lists of sins, none of these lists align with the traditional “deadly” sins known today; the list of seven cardinal sins were actually created in the fourth century by a monk named Evagrius Ponticus (ReligionFacts). After several revisions, a list of cardinal sins fell into more popular use when poet Dante Alighieri used them in The Divine Comedy (ReligionFacts). According to modern interpretations of the list, the seven sins are as follows:

The Seven Deadly Sins have been around since the very beginning of religion and christianity. Many of the sins play a key role in numerous stories and epics and the moral of those stories usually focuses on avoiding those specific sins. One particular sin has a large role in three books. Greed is characterized as an intense and selfish want for things, such as money and power. People today struggle with greed on a daily basis. It's human nature to do anything to gain as much power or popularity as possible due to their personal greed. Lying and cheating are ways people indulge in their greed whether it be to make money or become more powerful. Greed shows itself in many ways throughout the stories of the Canterbury Tales, Dr. Faustus, and Dante’s Inferno.

The past year has been quite a journey and I have learned and matured greatly over this time. I understand how big of a mistake I made, and I have thought on numerous occasions of how I would keep something like this from happening again if I was once again a student at the University of Alabama. I gained much insight from this event as I now live my life in a different manner and hold myself to higher ethical standards. I plan to live out these standards both inside and outside of the classroom, as I believe academic integrity carries over to more than just school. I hold myself personally accountable for every action that I take, and after everything has happened I know how to conduct myself even when no one is watching. My character has changed over the year and I carry out all of my actions in an honest manner regardless of the situation and these actions will also been shown in an academic setting. I believe honesty is key when following the academic code of conduct and I will be honest in all instances, which includes during the completion of any school work. I have learned that it is better to be honest when doing anything and I am also able to own up to any

In general, hubris is defined as having excessive pride or overconfidence, which can eventually lead to a downfall. In the past, Greeks described hubris as direct defiance of the gods wishes, however, the meaning of hubris has developed over time. Today, hubris is seen more as having a lack of humility or blind arrogance that leads an individual to believe that they are above typical human limitations, essentially godlike. One such individual that exhibits this ill-appealing quality is the current president of the United States, Donald Trump. Over the last couple of years, and since beginning his term in office, President Trump has displayed excessive pride, arrogance, and self-confidence through his political rallies, press conferences, demeaning tweets, and much more. Unlike the leaders before him, our president is simply “…a real estate developer known for golf courses, casinos, and a Moscow beauty pageant; he’s a gambler with other people’s money who exhibits poor judgment” (Blake, “Trump Sharing Highly Classified Information with Russia Shows His Extreme Hubris”). Examining President Trump’s decisions and the examples of hubris presented in Sophocles’ “Oedipus Tyrannus”, Andrew George’s “The Epic of Gilgamesh: the Babylonian Epic Poem and Other Texts in Akkadian and Sumerian” and the “Holy Bible: New International Version”, shows that his hubristic character will result in a tragic end for him and the entire nation alike.

Hubris, which can be defined as excessive pride, is also a trait which multiple leaders have or develop. The Seven Deadly Sins is a major aspect to the religion of Christianity. Religion in the Middle Ages was exceedingly important and the central character to the lives of the people living in this time era. In early fourteenth century, Robert Manning of Brunne wrote a poem of an educational text informing people to avoid the seven deadly sins. Sometime later, in the late 1500s, Edmund Spenser wrote a book entitled The Faerie Queene and in Book 1, Canto 4, Spenser discusses the Seven Deadly Sins as the two characters, Redcrosse and Duessa, embark on their journey to the sinful House of Pride. The Bible classifies the seven deadly sins – greed, envy, sloth, wrath, gluttony, pride and lust – as the characteristics of people which will lead to unhappiness. One particular sin evident in our world today is greed. Greed is defined as an excessive desire to possess wealth or goods. The greed that exists in our world leads people to unhappy and selfish lives. Greed is evident through individual people, corporate companies and in our governments.
