To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that “interpersonal communication is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable” due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand: your culture, the other person’s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and intercultural relationships.

When you are in an intercultural relationship you can learn exactly what there communicative behaviors are. Everyone has their different ways they communicate with other people, whether it is family or friends. Communication is by far one of the most important keys to have when you are in a relationship. Without communication there would be no relationship. One of the unique aspects of an intercultural relationship is to learn how and why that individual communicates in a different way compared to you. Having an intercultural relationship is all about learning someone else’s culture and communication is by far the most important aspect.

Intercultural communication is defined as situated communication between individuals or groups of different linguistic and cultural origins. Throught this movie race plays a major role between Michael and his new surrondings. His adoptive family is caucasion and Michael is african American, he’s low class and they are high class pertaining to social and econimc standards. When he was driven to the school and was taken through the wealthy neighborhood, he was looking around like he was on a diiferent planet.

Because communication between two people of different cultures is very challenging, there has been extensive research/studies conducted on this topic. This idea was also very interesting to me because I attended a highly diverse high school, in which we had a Global Studies program where international students were invited to come and learn at our school. The immersion of the different cultures was very difficult to adapt to at first because it was new to a lot of us students who have never attended a school where international students were amongst us in the halls, but as the days went on it became normal to me.

Today, we live in a culturally diverse society due to globalization. As our world grows, expands and become increasingly more interconnected, the need for effective interpersonal communication among differing cultures has become apparent. When people from different cultures interact with one another there is intercultural communication because different cultures create different interpretation and expectations about what is seen as competent behaviors that will enable the construction of shared meanings.

Communication is the process of transferring meanings from sender to receiver. On the surface this appears to be fairly straightforward process.
