Internal Conflict In Brutus's Soliloquy Essay

At the beginning of Act Two, we see Brutus dealing with an internal conflict. Brutus, unable to sleep, walks around his garden, contemplating whether or not he should join the conspiracy. In Brutus’s soliloquy, Shakespeare gives him an analogy, which he uses to convince himself that Caesar should be assassinated. It is the metaphor of the snake, in which Brutus says “It is the bright day that brings forth the adder / And that craves wary walking.” (2.1.14-15). Brutus compares the “bright day” to the crown, which symbolizes power, and Caesar to the “adder”. Shakespeare uses a snake to represent Caesar because a snake can destroy the innocence of nature, which represents how Brutus believes that if Caesar receives the crown he will have too much
