1. Introduction
Italy is the 72nd largest country. Italy’s border countries are Austria, France, Vatican City, San Marino, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Italy’s main natural hazard is volcanoes. Italy’s main environmental issue is the pollution of the air caused by industrial emissions. Some of the consequences of those issues are: sulfur dioxide, acid rain and insufficient industrial waste treatment. Italy has many ethnic groups, such as: German, French, and Slovene-Italians. Over 50% of Italy practices Christianity and a small portion of the population is Atheist. Italy became a nation state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula were united under King Victor Emmanuel II. The era of parliamentary government in Italy ended in the early 1920s when Benito Mussolini established a Fascist dictatorship. Mussolini’s alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy to be defeated in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and the economy then strengthened. Italy is member of NATO. Italy has had persistent problems with economic growth, unemployment for those of young ages and women, and crime. As of July 2014, Italy’s population is 61,680,122. In population comparison to the world, Italy is ranked 24. Almost 30% of Italy’s population is below poverty line. Italy’s population growth rate, as of 2014, is 0.3%.
