This letter is focused about the internet filters we are using as of right now for students and school staff. I understand the use of the internet filter for school reasons and law enforcement, but, this new internet filter we are using tend to block our sources of information. The internet filter should be less strict than it is right now because of some of the internet sources such as the “New York Times,” and “Huffington Post,” are blocked. Teachers and students use these websites to find subjects and topics that can forward their assignments. The new internet filter should have blocked websites that students often use that decrease the internet; most students and some teachers would be importuned or whiny about these certain websites being blocked for entertainment. The internet filter should be ameliorated to only to block websites which are using more bandwidth than other websites.
The internet filters in this school are to deny our access to websites so students couldn’t misuse the internet for their own source of entertainment. Teachers I see often glare and seem likely to go berserk on the students who use the internet to beguile on tests and homework assignments. The new internet filter blocked websites using the most bandwidth in the school, but the

Teachers such as Mark Peacock uses the “New York Times” to find topics for his students to research upon. I used this website to confirm my research about certain topics about history and health. My health project was about researching the “Atkins Diet.” There were articles on the website but the topics were blocked and filtered as “adult.”I attempted using “Huffington Post” but this website was filtered as “adult.” I had to use different sources of information, but I had little information that can be approved, so I was tempted to retract some
Patrick Cloonan, teacher at Manheim School District, reported to Hi-Lite Online that while some websites like YouTube have inappropriate content, it can also have beneficial materials for students. In the text it said, students have better research without web filters. This confirms that students could be asked to do an assignment and the websites that are restricted are not able to be used by those students (“NYT”).
Duff, White & Turner, LLC “ Schools Should Punish Students for Misuse of Networking sites” (Document D). If Schools have dealt with a number of incidents concerning improper use of internet sites should be banned. I believe school computers should be used only for homework and school purposes. The internet being an open network, which includes big Social Networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook of course students are going to pay more attention to that. Schools should restrict all those websites , although there are ways around in which students use to bypass. Schools around the United States have entered into an education code in which it authorizes to expel, suspend, or removal of school. Even though some students might say the school can't get into what they do after or outside of campus. The school can engage in taking charge of conduct resulted in disruption of the school environment. The school may lawfully discipline any student for such
The top three filters that are used ar Url-based, keyword-based, and finally blacklist-based. Out of the schools asked the schools said 70% use Url-based filters. This is because the filter goes more in-depth and doesn’t take away from the students learning experience. Url-based is where the filter will search for educational sites and filter out the ones that are not educational. After a list of bad sites has been generated the filter will then block those site from minors accessing them will connected to the schools internet. The second filter type, which is keyword-based, is used in 60% of the schools asked. Keyword-based could be good because the filter reads the whole site and if there are any words that have been blacklisted in the filters software then the filter will block the whole site from minors access. So let's say the website the student was trying to access had a the word, “Pornography” on it the filter would ban the website from viewing. Third, Blacklists, Blacklists have a set list of websites that have been put together by the government that they think the information on the site is harmful to minors and should be blocked from access. When schools were asked if their online content was filtered 98% said content is filtered at school. The question is though to what extent. 94% said they use filtering software such as the
" The United States government has a responsibility to ensure that every American has access to an internet that has a freedom of information. The internet has become a necessity in our everyday lives. School age Americans use the internet for research projects and even to submit homework. A vast majority of working-age Americans use the internet for the jobs or are involved in producing the inputs necessary to advance technology and keeping the current technology infrastructure working. The U.S. government has a limited duty in monitoring internet content. The government should have the ability to protect Americans from cyber acts and personal information theft. Currently the Federal Trade Commission has the power to regulate the internet
The implication of web filters in schools is a major controversial topic and it has been for many years. One of the reasons we have web filters set up within schools in the first place comes from the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). This act, enacted in 2000, requires that K-12 schools use some form of internet filters as a way to protect students from the potential harm of what they may come across on the internet. This
Schools should have the right to monitor the internet. If you_Ñére in school grounds the school has the right to monitor what you_Ñére doing because you_Ñére on school grounds. Once you_Ñére on school grounds the rules change. People should already know that they are limited once they_Ñére on school grounds. It is a good thing for schools to monitor the internet to keep everyone safe. It would help prevent people from going on places
All aspects of internet filters will be discussed including who chooses to use filtering software, why these groups use filters, how an internet content filter works, and the pro’s and con’s of implementing the use of filtering software.
Although the internet is not school property, it makes sense that schools should hold the ability to establish boundaries that limit students’ online speech. The reason being that a limitless voice online can cause disruptions to the school environment, cyberbullying, and an infringement of a school’s responsibility to protect their students.
Naguera discussed on CNN that censoring information from the internet is a “slippery slope” and can cause problems with a student’s First Amendment rights. Above all, the First Amendment which states, “Congress Shall Make No Law Respecting an Establishment of Religion, or Prohibiting the Free Exercise Thereof; or Abridging the Freedom of Speech, or of the Press; or the Right of the People Peaceably to Assemble, and To Petition the Government for a Redress of Grievances.” Just this one statement from the First Amendment brings up the debate of how much of a student’s rights are taken away from them by censoring their access the internet on school grounds? Furthermore, there is fear that filtering the internet in high schools can cause problems between the schools and students as stated in the article Internet Censorship Pros and Cons List, which was posted on the website
Personally, I would say expel the bad kids or suspend them, and leave the internet to be somewhat restrictive, but more lenient. The entire school shouldn’t suffer from the inability to do research to work on a class project just because Joe Schmo decides to watch illicit clips on inappropriate websites.
You have a project due, but many of the websites you need for your research are blocked by your school’s filters. Many students have this problem when searching the web, which is why school web filters used to block inferior websites from students are too restrictive, and should be revised or removed.
THIS WEBSITE IS INACCESSIBLE. If you are a student with a technological device, you have probably received this message. Those in favor of strong filters insist they protect students and keep them focused. However, restrictive filters keep students from educational information, personal interests, and using personal time to the best of their abilities. To allow students to use technology to their advantage, school filters must be reduced.
Censorship is not limited to repressive regimes or network television. Weather we know it or not censorship is happening all the time throughout the day. We censor ourselves, we listen to censored music and as students we see the internet being heavily censored in school. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was signed into law in 2000; the law requires any public schools or library to filter any inappropriate content from the computers being used by minors. Since the law has been put in place, schools across America have installed programs that use keywords to designate certain types of websites off-limits to students while using the schools internet server. The problem with these filtering programs is that they block many sites that are not pornographic or obscene in nature, Instead they tend to block sites dealing with controversial but not inappropriate content. Although the CIPA was created to protect, it has been used as a soft form of censorship in schools.
Think to the time when you were in school. When you looked for informational websites, did you ever come against an Internet filter? This has become very common now, as schools don’t know how Internet filters work, but require the filters for state funding. Most schools use a filter just to receive funding from the state, not knowing what they were doing to the many informative websites of the Internet. In my opinion, I think that schools should filter the Internet, but should restrain the strength of their filters.
These days the internet has become an essential part to living for almost everyone but one of the controversial topics that people bring up is that whether or not the government should regulate information on the internet. Both sides have valid points which form a reasonable argument. Some people would say that they need to because of the dangers lurking around in the cyber world but the reasons for why the government shouldn’t regulate the Internet outnumber the reasons for why they should. The federal government should not regulate or censor information on the internet because doing so violates the first amendment and citizen’s right to privacy, degrades the educational value of the web, prevents the promotion and facilitation of
