Google, one the world 's largest technology companies that specialize in internet related products and services. Google’s mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” (Google). Such a large organization, taking on such an enormous task needs to have a significant human resource (HR) team to manage all of the diverse individuals the company employs. Laszlo Bock, Senior Vice President, People Operations, is the gentleman responsible for leading Google’s HR team. He is known for his unique teamwork structure called the “three-thirds” model. The function of the human resource department is to hire employees, retain employees, issue benefits, and keep up to date with state and federal employment laws. These teams which make up a HR department play an essential role in developing a company 's strategy as well as handling the employee-centered activities within an organization. Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith define a team as “a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable” (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2013, p.300). While Google’s HR team, also called People Operations, may display characteristics of a team, they function in three small groups.
