Eating Disorders affect not only the human body but the mental state of those who suffer with the illness. The result of eating disorders is commonly fatal, resulting in suicide or other bodily damages and mental issue. Different types of eating disorders exist, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Each disorder affects the body and mind in harsh ways which will be discussed furthermore. These types of illnesses can be placed in the general area of social psychology and brain functioning. Low self-esteem is a major factor, low self-esteem is the result of the influence we are surrounded by in our social environments. How other people portray the way you look and what the media is telling people they should and should not look like. Coren and Hewitt have argued that this link is driven by other mental disorders that may lead to or begin to occur at the same time as the eating disorder, for example mood disorder Other studies show that there is a genetic risk for eating disorders and suicidality. Those that are born with specific genotypes are at a higher risk of developing eating disorders. This is associated with the chemicals in your brain that control appetite and hunger imbalance. The Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicide explain eating disorders and suicidality as an interpersonal psychological theory. They say suicide is only capable to those with high pain tolerance and no will to live. Feeling like a burden to those around them and as though they do not deserve to live gives a higher capability for suicide. The eating disorders allow for them to have a higher pain tolerance on their bodies. Related to this are studies by smith and colleagues that suggest the rate is linked with belongingness, burdensomeness and suicidal thoughts also known as suicidal
