Intervention For Unocumented Immigrants

There are many vulnerable populations within the United States. One of the many vulnerable populations are undocumented immigrants. Undocumented immigrants also known as illegal immigrants according to Wikipedia (2016) is defined as “the migration of people across national boarders in a way that violates the immigration laws of the destination country” (para 1). The United States of America has one of the largest population of immigrants. In this paper, I will be discussing the multiple stressors related to undocumented immigrants as well as the programs that can be used to help alleviate those stressors.

Everyday people are sent to the hospital. Not only are they in fear of losing their life but also in fear of being in debt due to the prices of health care treatment they need. But what if this patient happens to be an illegal alien? What if the patient has a foreign illness that needs to be cured so it does not spread? Is it morally correct to deny this person treatment because he or she lacks citizenship or a valid visa? Or should illegal aliens be treated just like any other patients by having a right to health care?

In my ENC 1101 class, we were required to go through several of processes to map out the formula of writing our final assignment in our class: a synthesis essay. I learned so many things about how she arrived in American as a small child with only her sister by her side and her strive to become American. The emotional struggles of Carmen and her sister, Elena, were real and I didn’t realize it was that emotionally draining to come to a new country. Her experience showed me how hard it is to fit into a new society knowing absolutely nothing about the world she was dropped into. The fact that she flew here with her younger sister and then live for three months without her parents to guide her in this unfamiliar setting, shows me how strong and brave Carmen was at the young age of eight. Invisible workers are workers who are usually performing jobs or services that may be behind the scenes, unseen and unknown, maintaining a low profile to avoid detection. This country has many invisible workers and many of them are here as undocumented workers. The jobs they do and services they perform help to keep our society running smoothly in many cases. Often they do not get credit for the work that they do, but in many cases, we could not get along without them. Many of the jobs the undocumented workers perform are jobs that no one else wants to do, such as work in sanitation, janitorial, construction, etc. Because of the nature of many of these jobs, a number of them are performed by those who are here without benefit of legal documentation.

The topic of deportations is important given that “an estimated 4.5 million U.S. citizen children live in families in which one or both parents are undocumented” (Gulbas & Zayas, 2017). In 2013, there were an estimated 41.3 million immigrants living in the United States. (Krogstad, 2014). According to present estimates, this foreign-born population consists of 18.6 million naturalized US citizens and 22.1 million noncitizens (Cenato, 2013). Among the noncitizens, approximately 13.3 million are permanent legal residents, while 11.3 million (28%) are unauthorized migrants. (Cenato, 2013). The majority of unauthorized immigrants are primarily from Mexico and other Latin American countries, they live Texas, Florida, California, New York and Arizona (Zong et. al 2015).

Unit 4 is the last unit for this class and for the last one; we were given the option to present our work to the class instead of writing an essay. We were allowed to choose the topic of our project which allowed the students to work on a subject to their interest. I partnered up with Giovannie (Gio) Legaspi for this project. It took a couple days to find out the topic of our project. We were looking through different commercials to see what they were trying to argue. We were thinking about the pro life and pro choice debate to be our subject but found it difficult so, we eventually decided to do immigration.
