The agency that I visited was the University of Houston-Clear Lake Psychological Services Clinic (UHCL PSC) which was located in the Arbor building. In order to learn more about the UHCL PSC program, I interviewed Dr. Julia Strait. Dr. Strait is the Clinic Director at the UHCL PSC and She is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of School Psychology. Dr. strait was very kind and gave me the opportunity to learn more about her. She received her Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin and her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her areas of interest in psychology are the brain, memory, and behavior problems. She is a Licensed Psychologist (TN), Provisionally Licensed Psychologist (TX), Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP; TX), and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). Dr. Strait was previously an English High school and middle school teacher before she started in the school psychology Ph.D. program at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Strait also has experience with children who suffered from neglect, maltreatment (physical and sexual abuse) while working at a hospital for a couple of years.
Since Dr. Strait recently started working at the UHCL PSC, she did not know much about the history of the clinic. The clinic first started about 10 years ago, and the Arbor building, where the PSC is located, is a new building that was built about 5 years ago. There has been a

The purpose of this essay is to explain the definitions of mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability, using bipolar disorder as an example to illustrate these points. Bipolar disorder will also be used to explain the concepts of the medical and social models of disability, highlight the influence these two models could have on people with the disorder and the experiences they might encounter. There will be a focus on some of the experiences a person suffering from mental illness might have in society, the effect these experiences can have on an individual and the influence of stigmas and stereotypes. This leads to the final discussion point, the action of self-disablement. This section discusses how a person with a mental health issue can be influenced by labels, stigmas and stereotypes, and how this can stop them from seeking help and achieving their goals.
The following essay will begin by demonstrating what is understood by the concept of mental health. It will attempt to identify different explanations for the underlying issues causing mental illnesses and it will then centre around a case study focusing specifically on one mental health problem. A description of what the causes and effects of the chosen illness will be given and information on the available treatment will be presented. To round up the assignment a brief explanation of the chosen case study will be included with an attempt to distinguish the common issues identified and how they relate to the literature information provided throughout. In this assignment, the case study chosen will target depression.

Working in the mental health field has exposed me to different clients with psychosocial behaviors, and I have viewed how individuals are often impacted in our cultural, societal and environmental system. I have also observed the impact it has in clients when there are policy changes in an agency. The focus of this analysis is to further provide an examination of agency policies, operations conflict, steps that can be taken in administrative level and steps in the micro level to resolve conflicts that may arise. The focus of this analysis will also concentrate on a community mental health agency named Enki Health & Research System, Inc., (ENKI) that helps children with different behavioral difficulties.
As I conducted my interview with Andrea Williams, I learned that she has been working at this particular Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility by the name of Pecan Grove Therapeutic Group Home for Girls about a year in a half. This facility is located in Lyon, Mississippi. There are a total of ten people working there including herself. I asked series of questions to familiarize myself about the importance of her job as a director.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 8% of persons over the age of twelve reports being currently depressed, this includes 6% of the male population (2014). This literature also reports males aged forty to fifty-nine having higher rates of depression (7%), when compared to males sixty years or older (5%) (2014). In 2010 there were 63.3 million visits to primary care physicians, hospital outpatient units and emergency rooms attributed to mental health diagnosis (CDC, 2014). In the same year, there were 395,000 psychiatric inpatient discharges with major depressive disorder as the primary diagnosis. These individuals had an average stay of six and a half days (CDC, 2014). Inpatient and outpatient treatment is seemingly a revolving door. One article examines the growing number of people being diagnosed with depression, yet the declining number of people seeking outpatient care. This article reports 2.88 out of 100 people seek outpatient treatment for their depression (ScienceDaily, 2010). It is imperative for practitioners of group practice to understand that men and women experience depression differently and to then formulate treatment based on the individual’s unique needs (NIH, 2014).

There are many reasons I want to pursue a degree in clinical mental health counseling. First and foremost helping people has always been a passion of mine from an early age. Having come from a troubled past as a child and young adult and being able to completely turn my life around, I want to be able to help other troubled youth do the same. I fully understand how dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, grief and loss, mental health disorders, and physical handicaps can have a negative, lasting impact on a child, if not dealt with appropriately and in a timely manner. Living through these personal experiences has given me a glimpse into the team that is required to achieve success and I want to become an intricate part of that team.
Theories play an important role in how a counselor serves their clients. Theories provide counselors with a foundation on which to build their counseling style. “Theories ground us as professional counselors. They provide a means to understand what we are doing, how we are serving clients, and how to explain counseling to clients” (Erford, 2010). Counselors are responsible for being aware of different theories in order to apply them appropriately within their practice. Established and new theories play an important and constant role in mental health counseling. Established theories in mental health counseling are based on “empirical or scientific foundations” (American Counseling Association, 2005). The best way to gain the most
Mental Health has been recognized, as the well-being at which individuals are able to cope with everyday stresses, and work productively while contributing back to their community. Mental Health America began in the early 1900’s by Clifford W. Beers, a former psychiatric patient who experienced mental/physical abuse during his stay in public and private institutions. It wasn’t until short after a reform group emerged, to stand against the abuse and ill-treatment at these institutions. In this paper, I will be discussing the history/background of Mental Health Services, and how quality, access, cost or other factors have changed (or how they haven’t). I also will be discussing the populations that benefit from this type of service and the significant issues, and or problems within the area that impact specific populations. Lastly, I will interpret national policy, legislation, attitudes, political climate, and how they impact or relate to the problems discussed, then I will address two current issues discussed along with clarifying each discussion.
