Introduction: Frank Lloyd Wright is one of America’s most influential architects that has left a legacy of structures that are collaged with Nature (Mead, 2014, February). Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture, has left a legacy of tranquil spaces hidden within parks that are known for their “picturesque” qualities (Mead, 2014, January). These two men are completely different with the designs that they’ve created simply because they are using different mediums, but ultimately there aren’t a lot of contrasting elements to their designs. Although personal experiences with home were influential for both Wright and Olmsted, inspiration was also found overseas in England and Japan. Throughout their lifetimes they traveled overseas and these experiences were highly referenced in their later work. Wright left his family because of his crumbling marriage, and moved with his mistress to Europe in 1909 (Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, 2012). Later, after the relationship with his mistress fell apart, he lived in Japan and found most of the original architecture that he would be referencing for the remainder of his career. For example, he took dominant roofs as a strong characteristic of Japanese architecture and utilized it very often in his own work. On the other hand, when Olmsted became too sick to continue going to college he found himself working an odd number and variety of career fields, and created landscape architecture. After about ten years he decided to go on a tour of Europe, because of the trips with his father as a kid he was partial towards the English countryside; there was a good supply of spaces to explore and discover picturesque views. The differing influences that Wright and Olmsted have were just as relevant to their personal work as the ones that they shared.
