Inventions and Ideas Of The 1960’s
Have you ever wondered where some of the most important things in our lives come from or who made them? The 1960’s was one of the most influential decades ever with so many new inventions and innovations. Some of the best inventions were made in the 1960’s. Most of the inventions that were made then are still used today. The 1960’s

Some of these inventions include lasers, Etch A Sketch, Easy-Bake Oven, skateboards, video games and, audio cassette tapes. The video game Space Wars made in 1966 was one of the most impactful entertainment inventions. It was created by Ralph Baer but it did not actually become popular until 1972. Another invention that was very impactful would have been the Etch A Sketch made by Andre Cassagnes because it was used by so many different age groups and used for so many different purposes where all you had to do was draw with it and then shake the board and you could would start over with a blank screen. The Sixties have been described by historians as the ten years having the most significant changes in history” (Rich). Some of the technological inventions were, The handheld calculator, ram chip, compact disk, basic computer language, A.T.M, computer mouse, barcode scanner, and ARPANET. The handheld calculator was invented by Jack Kilby who referred to it as “Caltech” and is still used in schools today. Another invention that revolutionized this era was the ram chip invented by Robert Dennard January, 1 1968 which allows you to randomly save information to a computer chip in random sequence. “ Inventions sprouted up through the entire decade in the U.S” (“ Famous Inventions Of The 1960’s”). Another invention was the barcode scanner which was made by NCR Corp. January 1, 1969 is of course still used and made a very heavy impact in american lives even today. Everytime you go to the grocery store and you check out they have to scan the barcode on the item for the price, so it is still very relevant. Without these technological advancement and inventions where would we be
This country has seen some of the most dramatic changes in technology, the economy, and global dominance to ever occur in America’s history. Times were good during the 1920s as the economy was booming and unemployment was low. However, the market was being overinflated and the pace of economic growth could not be sustained and in 1929 the stock market started dropping significantly. The entire country turned into a panic and the whole economy was being dragged down while unemployment skyrocketed. During the 1930s, America went through the worst depression in recent history. Lawmakers scrambled to figure out how to solve this
During the years of the 1800’s there were many technological, social and political developments in America. The country experienced growth through the Industrial Revolution, slavery and the women’s rights movement all in one century. The nation experienced reforms, utopian societies and compromises all in pursuit of a “perfect” America. All of the inventions, movements and amendments of the 1800’s helped shape America’s industry, government and society, overall shaping the United States.
Technology is quite different now than it was back then. The first color TV was introduced in 1951. Now, we have flat screen TV’s, 3D TV’s, TV’s that are controlled by the movement of our hands, and so many other technological advances. In the 1950’s, cell phones weren’t even created. Today, we have IPhones, Androids, Samsung’s, and many other cell phone producers. Although technology from the two time periods is different, both periods had technology such as phones, TV’s, cars, and computers.
As life was progressing in the fifties, we see that a prominent aspect during that period was the constant flux of new inventions. These inventions were all created with a specific member of the family in mind. For example; inventions such as nonstick Teflon pans were created for the mother of the family who was the cook of the family. Super glue was invented for the father who was the repairman of the family. For the children, there were three renowned toys that made their first appearance in the fifties. These items were the hula hoops, Barbie dolls, and Mr. Potato head (Bellis). Although there was one invention that targeted the whole entire family and this item had a massive impact upon society. It changed the way that people got information and entertainment. In fact, this chain effect was so great that even today in our modern society we are still able to feel it. This revolutionary change was called television.
The 1950s saw the introduction of a new range of synthetic clothing materials like nylon, acrylic polyester and vinyl. The younger generation clothes were influenced by rock & roll with girls wearing full skirts in bright colours made to be danced in. Elvis Presley’s style struck with some teen boys, with them slicking back they hair and jeans, leather boots and a white t-shirt became a symbol for the rebellious teens everywhere. In 1950s, Australia started to get TV for the first time with it arriving just in time for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
The 1960’s transformed American life in ways unimaginable when the decade began. It produced new rights and new understandings of freedom. It made possible the entrance of numerous members of racial minorities into the mainstream of American life, while leaving unsolved the problem of urban poverty. It set in motion a transformation of the status of women. It changed what American expected from government, from clean air and water to medical coverage in old age. At the same time, it undermined public confidence in national leaders.
Technology in the 1960’s was somewhat similar to today’s technology. One example of technology that was helpful in the space race was the X–plane series. The X-15 was a rocket-powered aircraft. They used
The 1950’s were a big time period for technological involvement in America. Companies were concocting an ever-increasing number of tools to make life easier for Americans. Many homes were also now built with television sets included so most families had access to shows and movies within their living areas. Television created a more technologically involved country. Houses were even built with a television set included.
The technology of World War II, which lasted from 1939 to 1945, was a big part of the determination of the outcome of the war. Much of the technology was developed during the interwar years. Some of it was developed because of failure and hindrance in war progression, obviously because of inefficient technology. Still some was in the beginning stages of development as the war ended. Though earlier war greatly utilized science, mathematics, and innovation, World War II had the largest impact on the innovation in technology of the current lives of Americans. Furthermore, no war, preceeding or succeeding, was as profoundly affected by science, mathematics, and technology as World War II. Science and technology have always made
The 1920s was an amazing time for America’s economy, especially in science and industrial developments. Scientific ideas and developments in the 19th century brought the opportunity for American advancements that are now seen today. These new inventions and scientific processes not only sets up America for success, but also the success for other countries. After the Great War, America wanted to go back to the idea “normalcy” but really America was changing, and they didn’t even know it.
The 1950s saw Americans living at their most prosperous in over twenty years. The 1950s saw the development of important and life changing technologies, which we heavily use today such as jet airplanes and the precursor to computers. Cars and homes got increasingly luxurious, fashion got increasingly bold, and the role of women began its tumultuous change. 1960s: The 1960s are arguably the most
Technological advances during this time produced essentials we use today: the atom bomb, computer technology, and the radio were some important inventions, but among
The 1960’s was a very influential time in the United States of America. The United States began to explore a new culture of people known as hippies. The USA endured a great scare of nuclear war from the Cuban Missile Crisis. This country lost two famous leaders from that era; John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., who were assassinated. The United States also began the move towards equality by passing the Civil Rights Act. The final major accomplishment from 1960’s was when Neil Armstrong was the first astronaut to land on the moon.
I am a strong independent woman who don’t need no man, so I did this project single handedly. I worked on the topics such as Fashion, Art, and Entertainment. My most favorite topic about the 50s would have to be fashion, mainly because of my interest in the culture of the time.
The 1960s was crammed full of many impacting events and important figures. From Hitchcock releasing one of the greatest thrillers of all time, Psycho, to Marilyn Monroe’s untimely death, to the infamous Woodstock festival. This era changed history completely and made the United States think twice about its youth. Events of the 1960s are still impacting our country as we know it today. The sudden pull from the conservative ‘50s changed America’s views on all aspects of life, including fashion, entertainment, and lifestyles.
