In May, CSG executives acknowledged it has an inventory management problem: the company lost $3 billion in 2014 sales due to out of stock merchandise while its inventory grew at a faster rate than its sales. Even though the company cited poor weather, higher than expected tax rates, and an economically challenged customer base as its chief challenges, the inventory problem certainly contributed to its lower earnings for the quarter ending April 30.

Some of the things to consider here include inaccuracies when it comes to inventory reporting, failure to comply with the national merchandising campaign in the first place, and a failure to adequately comply with the planogram, which is a very detailed plan regarding the ways in which campaigns, promotions and sales plans are to work together in order to promote overall success.
A change in technology and processes is needed to improve its inventory management in May; the comments posted by thoughtful CSG employees after the fact revealed store back rooms are out of control. A combination of poor procedures and too few payroll hours allocated to managing the space make it almost impossible to find product when needed. Any organization that carries an inventory of products has a need to maintain accurate information on the movements of all these items to better serve its customers and run a profitable business. During the game, I realized that wide gaps in orders of every role in the supply chain such as factory, distributor and retailer create inventory management challenges. For example, distributor records 0units between week1-week 4 compared to retailer within the same period. The retailer records 3units, 5units, 2units and 2units between weeks 1- week 4. “In an age of increasing specialization, it is rare for one person to be knowledgeable in all aspects of a complex task” (Thompson, 2015, p. 88). In this case, the first step was to understand our incoming demand. For this, I relied on information technology to generate numerous reports as well as the expertise of our sales team. It was at that point that the data was analyzed in conjunction with an inventory specialist. After we had the knowledge of what current product to inventory, we then needed to establish a set of guidelines of how to qualify products in the future. Inventory control management processes were instituted as well as a supply an auditing system. These steps included information from organizational members from our manufacturing group, planning department, and procurement department. Finally, we needed to understand and facilitate the storage and shipping of the product. We enlisted the help of our warehouse employees as well as our transportation department. This type of project included various levels of the organization and required a tremendous amount of communication. The purpose of this course project is to address the ongoing issues surrounding my companies, REI (Recreation Equipment Inc.,) inventory management issue and to see if we can find a software program better suited to the companies needs. The goal is to find products quickly and efficiently. Customer satisfaction is key to driving sales and profit in any company. As a result a software upgrade is certainly needed in order to compete with other companies in the same industry.
Office Depot uses multiple inventory strategies to order products. 90% to 95% of goods are ordered through automatic replenishment, manual replenishment, pull replenishment, and global sourcing are also used depending on channel, volume, velocity and cost. (Office Depot, 2015). The accuracy of the inventory from both a DC and store perspective is critical to the organizations success. Heizer and Render (2014) state that record accuracy is a prerequisite to inventory management, production scheduling, and sales. Accuracy is maintained by either periodic or perpetual systems (p.479). In Office Depot, the stores are required to cycle-count technology items such as laptops, desktops computers, and tablets five days a week. Discrepancies are entered in the system and bounced off the local DC’s on-hand inventory discrepancies. Office Depot is a “blind receive” organization meaning the stores receive pallets of products and simply unwrap and put them away. The only way a store knows if a product is missing is through the cycle-count program. This system was put into place to speed up the receiving process and eliminate unnecessary steps once the product was received at the store level. Office Depot conducts a full physical inventory once a year through a third party and trues up the inventory shrink at this time.
Employing new merchandising tools aid the company in realizing lean production measures with its supply chain. Forecasting capabilities substantiated through “The combined efforts of our supply chain, merchandising, operations and finance teams, we reduced inventory by almost half a billion dollars in 2009, while at the same time improving our in-stock position” (Datamonitor 360, 2010).
If there is too little production of inventory then you will have unhappy customers. And if there is too much inventory produced then you will have an excessive amount of inventory in storage. These factors happen when the projection for a project is wrong and the data used is incorrect.
Second, the classification in inventory management is still inaccurate. That results in some problems such as: the severe lack of some products which are in growing demand (1 inch valve series 230), the redundancy making storage expenses go up and the stagnancy in storage area (to products like gear driven rotary and monitor controller)
Production planning becomes even more complicated because of the influence of the out-of-stocks, which would cause the sales graphs to be heavily distorted. The graphs would be distorted if items were out of stock for a month and the backorders were filled in a short period of time. Whenever there were overstock issues, retail stores would push the items through discounts. Often when there were out-of-stock issues for the wholesalers the company would take the supplies from their retail stores and divert it to the wholesaler’s order. Lastly, when special orders were placed for wholesale, it was not uncommon for the production plans to be put on hold to focus on special orders. As a result from all the production errors, the sales graph would have unnatural spikes, yet these spikes would be included for planning production for the following year.
Bad forecasting by Distributors: The distributors did not have forecasting systems or sophisticated analytical tools for determining order quantities and this resulted in bad forecasts.

This allowed users to navigate the device by selecting pictures on the screen by using the click of a mouse. The success of this creation inspired the development of modern computers. It helped to launch the use of the Graphical User Interface that most modern-day computers use today.
SF does not want the product overproduced, provide timely reporting of product sales in order to avoid this problem. For this reason, the company's inventory becomes a serious problem.
