Investigating How Bennett Creates and Maintains Interest in the Play A Cream Cracker under the Settee
'A cream cracker under the settee' is a dramatic monologue. A monologue is a drama piece performed by only one person. By explaining the characterization, humor, timescale and pauses of this monologue this essay will look at the ways Alan Bennett holds the interest of the audience. The monologue is told by a 75 year old woman whose name is Doris. Doris is a down to earth Yorkshire widow. It is a day in her life when she recalls past memories and explains a lot about her past.
Doris is a lady who takes a lot of pride in keeping her home spotlessly clean and tidy. Bennett has managed to introduce other

It is never actually told what Stafford house is, yet the audience is given clues that it may be an old people's home. Doris views Stafford house as a prison, somewhere she would never like to end up. 'I don't want to be stuck with a lot of old lasses. And they all smell of pee. And daft half of them, banging tambourines. You go daft there, there's nowhere else for you to go but daft' Doris would lose her freedom and dignity if she were ever to end up in Stafford house.
Zulema is vividly brought to life through Doris, we are shown how patronizing and insensitive she is towards Doris, 'You can't run anywhere. You're on trial here. For being on your own. For not behaving sensibly. For not acting like a woman of seventy-five who has a pacemaker and dizzy spells and doesn't have the sense she was born with'. To Doris this must be quite hurtful, yet Zulema doesn't seem to notice this, she is very inconsiderate and sees herself far superior to Doris.
Another character which is brought to life through Doris is her late husband Wilfred. At first the audience is not clear whether Wilfred is still alive, yet Doris explains how Wilfred was a dreamer, always scheming and coming up with ideas
The practitioner in an early years setting supporting children’s play learning and development is extremely important, as play helps stimulate the child’s brain, supports their needs on an educational level, as well as helping them with social difficulties such as building relationships, developing them and helping them gain confidence. Many people believe that a child learns best when they are motivated, such as Fredrich Froebel. He believed that children benefitted from all types of play. The McMillan sisters believed that outdoor play was extra important as they studied children who played and slept outside and discovered that they were the happier and healthier children in comparison to those who only played inside.
A Cream Cracker Under The Settee is a Monologue, this means it is just 1 person speaking instead of like a normal play, like a normal play it has different characters, like the policeman or the boy said to be ‘spending a penny’ but these do not have a role of great significance, so it just mainly focuses on the main character, Doris.
other’s in the play. This intrigues the audience and compels them to enjoy every moment that
These are of great importance and are essential to the development and well being of a child, having the rights of the child set in place helps us as playworkers to have something to follow and ensure that they are being put into practice and achieved within the setting.
The play makes you think, whether for a split moment or a long time, about the idea of being aware while going about even the most menial of tasks.
The center I chose to observe was the dramatic play center which is a kitchen. I chose this center because because it's a great way to observe children. The purpose of the dramatic play center is to help develop social, emotional and oral language skills. It gives children a chance to assign roles, self regulate when having to take turns and during all of this children are developing language skills.

The melancholy of life, death and old age, are one of the many issues dealt with, in Alan Bennett’s heart-rending tale. It tells the story of an isolated, fragile, elderly woman, who feels ensnared in a modernised society in which she strives for her sovereignty and prominence. In a culture where the old are forgotten, neglected and depicted as useless. ‘A Cream Cracker Under The Settee’ seems to be the perfect title of the play as the double entendre epitomizes this remarkably. In addition, another reason for the dramatic piece being called ‘A Cream Cracker Under The Settee’. Is because a cream cracker was indeed found under a settee in the play, this makes the title rather ironic. As the title in many ways also symbolises the character
1.Briefly explain why it is important that the team work together when supporting children and young people’s play.
In this play, the author Alan Bennett wants to convince the audience that education can be approached in many different ways. In fact, through the characters of Hector, Irwin, Dorothy Lintott and the headmaster, he shows us that there is no “right” or “wrong” way of teaching.
Our performance was effective because of how clear and straight forward it was, even though it was mime. The audience where aware of the setting and it being around a dinner table due to the two chairs being opposite each other with a ‘table’ in the middle, the audience where aware of which characters were which as we characterised the roles very well. For example, Anna was very giggly and hyper, contrasting Catherine’s formal demeanour and John and Maureen were a typical married couple. We used physical theatre for the oven and the stairs, which was stylistic and different for the audience to see, this fit in with the overall style of the lay as most of the stage directions involve physical theatre as in ‘The Brussels Sprouts Scene’ “the whole of this scene is performed stylistically with people frantically changing roles, playing scenery, properties and characters”. The use of thought tracking helped the audience to figure out which character is which. The use of gestures was also used, Maureen slapped Anna’s hand instantly giving away her very paternal and motherly role as Maureen. Our scene was effective also because the crackers being pulled apart in itself is representing the family being pulled apart for many reasons not just the economy, but the toll Catherine’s anorexia takes on the whole Dunbar family in different ways. Looking at Bleu’s group I could definitely see how they marked the moment: the tempo
‘A Cream Cracker under the Settee’ is a monologue of a character named Doris, who is in her 70’s and is coming to the end of her life. She fell whilst cleaning a picture of her and her deceased husband Wilfred on their wedding day, in her living room where most of the play is set.
Burnet, TX has been a gratifying small town to be a part of. The people of Burnet have been admirable to me through amazing times and dreadful times and present every time I've laughed or cried. And most of these moments have been involved with the Fine Arts Department of Burnet High School.
The play The Drawer Boy, written by Michael Healsey, expresses the universal theme of storytelling. Throughout the play the theme of storytelling is represented throughout the whole play by each of the three characters Miles, Morgan and Angus. Miles represents the theme of storytelling through career, creating a story to share with others on stage. Meanwhile Morgan uses storytelling in order explained things to Angus and to understand things that have happen in the past. On the other hand Angus using storytelling to remember events due to his memory issues. Throughout the play storytelling is the main concept being represented.
A michevious streak had always run though the young boy and he was often the one to run around, playing games and getting out of trouble by looking at his mother with big eyes. Realizing her child had an excessive amount of energy, she enrolled him into every after school activity that she could. The only two that seemed to keep Knox’s interest were football and acting. Pursing the latter to the fullest, it was at
