Individual Fraction Summary Sheet Fraction # 1 Fraction I.D. : Isopropanol Alcohol 1. In the space below, list in order the techniques and criteria you used to separate this substance completely from the other fractions. • This fraction was the only liquid in the sludge, besides the food coloring. Soon after the sludge was examined, the liquid was decanted into a plastic bottle. 2. List each test you performed to determine the identity of this unknown substance from your sludge and give actual data collected (boiling point, density values, relative density, etc) that you used as evidence. • The first test performed was the density test. The measured was of the sample was 14.51 grams, and the volume was 20 cm3.…show more content…
• One test that would have helped confirm this liquid’s identity would be freezing it, while monitoring its temperature, and comparing it to the real freezing point of isopropanol alcohol (89˚C). Individual Fraction Summary Sheet Fraction # 2 Fraction I.D. : Yellow and Red Food Coloring 1. In the space below, list in order the techniques and criteria you used to separate this substance completely from the other fractions. • Fraction #2 was found mixed with isopropanol alcohol in the sludge. It was not separated from the mixture initially, but before performing the test, it was concentrated on a hot plate. 2. List each test you performed to determine the identity of this unknown substance from your sludge and give actual data collected (boiling point, density values, relative density, etc) that you used as evidence. • The first test was the paper chromatography test, to find out what different colors made up the orange found in the sludge. The coloring separated into yellow and red, and when added together, make orange (see attached). • The next test performed was the milk test, to be able to identify if the colored part is a food coloring or ink. When a toothpick with dish soap was placed in the colored liquid, it reacted, proving that it is a food coloring. • Based on all the tests performed, the group made the conclusion that this
