Invisible Man Essay Topic #9 The invisible man is a novel diving deep into the social and political issues of society. While doing so, it follows the experiences and obstacles of one particular blank man who is the “invisible man” (IM). Chapter to chapter, he comes across a new individual who has a completely different definition of him and that gives him a completely different role to play in society. By the end of the novel, the invisible man has a sense of moral reconciliation and he has some sense of his identity. His interactions with other characters, along with his attitude, and the use of several literary techniques used by the author make this moral reconciliation completely evident and obvious. Despite his advances towards an identity, those advances are usually destroyed by another character in the novel. In chapter twenty, the invisible man’s teacher told him when he was younger that he was "like one of these African sculptures, distorted in the interest of a design." The invisible man then asks "well, what design and whose?" During this part of the book, the invisible man seems to be the design of the Brotherhood to only talk based on what the Brotherhood tells him. When the invisible man talks to the Brotherhood after Clifton's funeral, he is told “You were not hired to think.” If he was not hired to think, then that suggests that he was created just to perform the tasks given to him, like those African sculptures. Thus, the realizations the IM has had up to this point are still on the minds of the readers but the IM seems to discredit the past and do what he is told. This is one of the experiences that distort the identity of the IM. In the epilogue, as the IM emerges from his refuge he says “Even an invisible man has a socially responsible role to play.” Making this declaration at the end of the novel is evident that he has developed as a character. The IM recognizes the fact that people do not see him for who he is, but that should not change who he is. The IM also says "Being invisible and without substance, a disembodied voice, as it were, what else could I do? What else but try to tell you what was really happening when your eyes
