Jessica Wheeler Mrs. Poje Room 113 11 May 2015 Involuntary manslaughter is the accidental killing of someone that happens when from recklessness or criminal negligence, or from and unlawful act that is a misdemeanor or low level felony. There have been many tragic, sad deaths caused by romance. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, two star-crossed lovers killed themselves because they could not be together. In our current time, these two may have been considered victims of involuntary manslaughter. Friar Laurence caused quite a few problems in this play that could make him guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Romeo and Juliet were so desperately in love with each other, but their families absolutely hated each other. Juliet …show more content…
Friar knew their relationship was premature and should not tamper with it. They were children who did not know what love was, they moved to quickly without thinking about what they were doing and how it would affect others. In act two scene six, Friar said to Romeo, “These violent delights have violent ends. Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, and in the taste confounds the appetite: Therefore love moderately: long love doth so, too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.” This one of many warnings Friar Laurence gave to Romeo before the marriage. He knew Romeo loved with his eyes and not his heart, they both knew that moving into love too fast was as bad as moving into love too late. Second thoughts were approaching everyone in that …show more content…
The news of Juliet’s “death” reached Romeo, he was depressed and suicidal. A few people knew of Romeo’s state of mind, including Friar Laurence, yet no one said or did anything to help him. Romeo went to Friar Laurence for guidance; he acquired a poison from him. He then went to visit Juliet’s body in the Capulet burial vault, he happened to run into Paris. Nothing could get in the way of Romeo seeing his beloved. Paris and Romeo started to fight; Romeo killed Paris with a hit to the chest. Romeo then reached Juliet’s body. With all that has happened, Romeo’s emotions got the best of him, and he committed suicide next to Juliet’s
Juliet took a Potion that put her into a deep sleep, which in result made her family think she was dead. Also making Romeo think the same thing, he went to her grave site to take his own life, there he had an encounter with her fiancé, Paris, and they engaged in a fight and shortly after killing Paris Romeo took his own life. A short time after Juliet awoke from her deep sleep she discovered that her husband and fiancé were dead and took her own
The Friar should have known that they were just kids and they were rushing into things. In Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence says, “These violent delights have violent ends. Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, and in the taste confounds the appetite”- Shakespeare. Also Friar knew that just a couple days before Romeo had his eyes set on Rosaline. The Friar knew that this was too fast, but he married them anyway. The Friar married Romeo and Juliet despite their parent wishes. The only reason the Friar married the two children was because he thought the feud between the two families would end. However, this did not go as planned. The Friar needed to find a way out of this chaos. This goes to show Friar Lawrence is the most to blame and put not only his life on the line, but also the lives of Romeo and Juliet.
Paris Ferrari page was on scene and able to comment “I was their, Paris was planting flowers on the Capulet tomb when the vile Romeo came to desecrate the tomb. Paris’s love for Juliet made him stand up to Romeo and a fight ensued, that is when I went to call the watchman.” The Prince was able to comment and said “This is a very sad time for both families, and a very tragic event for our city. They were all very young and had bright futures ahead of them. From the friars story we believe that the friar gave Juliet a potion to make her seem dead so that she wouldn't have to marry Paris. He told us that he secretly married Romeo and Juliet and that they loved each other. He sent a letter to Mantua where romeo was exiled to unfortunately the letter was never received by Romeo and because of that he came here to kill himself and that was when the fight between Paris and romeo happened and then romeo committed suicide beside his wife Juliet before she woke up and then killed herself with a dagger. Romeo also brought a letter with him to send to his
The big debate is if the Friar, the Nurse, and Balthasar are guilty of manslaughter in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet or not. To be guilty for manslaughter, it must be proven that someone was killed by an act of the person; the person’s act was either dangerous to human life or done with complete disregard to human life; the person knew that their action was a threat to the lives of others. The Friar seems to have the most evidence against him. The Friar meets all three criteria against both Romeo and Juliet. The Friar meets the first criteria of manslaughter on Romeo because he gave Juliet a potion which made her appear to be dead, which in turn caused Romeo to take
After Friar recognizes the issues Romeo and Juliet may face, he chooses to marry them saying, “For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone/ Till holy church incorporate two in one”(II.vi.36-37). Friar Laurence proceeds to naively marry Romeo and Juliet, knowing the family strife, knowing they were moving too fast, and knowing Romeo impulsively switches between
The definition of manslaughter is “The crime of killing a human being without malice aforethought, or otherwise in circumstances not amounting to murder.” By this definition, Friar Laurence should be charged with manslaughter for the unfortunate deaths of victims Romeo and Juliet. He was the mastermind behind the whole ordeal. Not only did he create the entire plan to get them together, he also accidentally ruined it, which ultimately led to their deaths.
Do you know what involuntary manslaughter is? Do you know anyone who has been accused of involuntary manslaughter? Do you know the real story of Romeo and Juliet? If you don't know, involuntary manslaughter is an unintentional death of someone that was caused by another person’s negligent actions. At the end of the story of Romeo and Juliet, they both commit suicide, but they weren't the ones to fully blame for it. The people that should be blamed for Romeo and Juliet’s death are Friar Laurence, Balthasar, the Nurse, and the Apothecary. All of these people could’ve prevented the suicides in some way. Instead, they were too busy worrying about other things.
If the Friar did not marry Romeo and Juliet before thinking about it he would have realized it was a bad idea. “These violent delights have violent ends/ And in their triumph die, like fire and powder” (II.VI.9-10). The Friar is saying that this could end violently but still proceeded in doing it. Although Juliet was responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence was the most responsible.
However, Romeo never receives word of what Friar Laurence and Juliet have done, because he never got the letter from Friar John. When Friar John comes back to Friar Laurence, and says he could not find Romeo so he could not deliver the message to him Friar Laurence makes his way towards the Capulet tomb alone. Romeo is also on his way to Juliet's tomb thinking she is dead, and he carries with him a vile of poison to kill himself by his lover's side. Though Friar Laurence may have been closer Romeo arrives first at Juliet's tomb and finds Paris there, after a short duel Romeo kills Paris and continues to Juliet who is still in a death like state. Once by Juliet’s side Romeo thinking his love Juliet is dead proceeds to drink the poison he brought with him killing
Many people read tragedies throughout their lifetime, and they wonder why this awful tragedy has occurred. Often times, a character causes this unfortunate demise. William Shakespeare’s famous play Romeo and Juliet tells of a tragedy between two lovers, where the two star-crossed lovers die in the end. Readers and analysts have pondered the thought of who did it. Friar Lawrence is an obvious reason for the unfortunate demise of Romeo and Juliet because he marries the two star-crossed lovers, helps Juliet escape the marriage to Paris, and fails to send Romeo a sign that Juliet faked her death.
The letter Friar writes to Romeo does not get to him on time. Romeo is told Juliet is dead, when she is not. She was faking her death to escape her family and be with Romeo. Romeo suspects something is odd, however he goes against his guts. He commits suicide because he claims he cannot live without Juliet. By then, it is too late for Friar to deliver the news to Romeo that Juliet is not dead, but faking her death to run away with him.
After meeting Juliet the night before, Romeo tells the friar about his sudden change of heart, confessing that “my heart’s dear love is set/ On the fair daughter of rich Capulet” (Shakespeare 2.3.58-59). Mindful that impulsive teenager was in love with Rosaline the day before, the wise friar scolds him, insisting that “Young men’s love then lies/ Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes” (Shakespeare 2.3.67-68). The sagacity of Friar Lawrence is conspicuous as he is immediately dubious about the authenticity of the hasty relationship. Recognizing the spontaneity and recklessness of the relationship, he warns the impetuous teenagers that “these violent delights have violent ends” (Shakespeare 2.6.9) and advises them to “love moderately: long love doth so;/ Too swift arrives as tardy as too slow” (Shakespeare 2.6.14-15). Nevertheless, he goes against his conscientiousness and grants Romeo’s wish to be married to Juliet, only because he hopes that “this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (Shakespeare 2.3.91-92). Friar Lawrence’s sole purpose of marrying Romeo and Juliet was to mend the animosity between the two families. Unbeknownst to the unsuspecting friar, the lovers were destined to die and his disregard to the haste of the relationship in marrying the couple only caused further suffering. In his own words, Friar Lawrence concludes that
When he did this, things went downhill extremely fast. Juliet was placed in a tomb, believe to be dead, but in fact was just unconscious. Her parents along with Paris grieved over her departure and Paris went to visit her when he was savagely killed. Romeo, who was banished from Verona, heard news of Juliet’s death and decided to kill himself next to Juliet with a potion he got from Apothecary. Romeo was supposed to receive a letter from the Friar stating that Juliet was not dead, but she had just taken a sleeping potion and would be waiting for him when she woke up.
I believe Romeo and Juliet were responsible for their own deaths because they married each other knowing there would be massive complications, and the love they had for each other would bring Romeo and Juliet to kill themselves if one was to die. Act 5 Scene 3 line 120, “Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die” (pg 1043). This shows how much Romeo cared for Juliet, he would kill himself because she was dead, which also shows how Romeo was responsible for his own death because it was his choice to kill himself or be killed from the death of Tybalt which he was responsible for, which still comes back to him and his own actions. Act 5 Scene 3 line 165-166 “Haply some poison yet doth hang on them
Romeo and Juliet one the most famous stories about love by William Shakespeare. Romeo and juliet were a pair of star crossed lovers who were destined to take their lives, for the sake that it will end a feud between their two families. Romeo’s family were the montagues and Juliet’s family were the capulets. If Romeo and juliet wouldn’t of killed themselves for the feud, they wouldn’t of been of happy together. Romeo was so quick to act in every situation, so he couldn’t really control his emotions. Both of them barely knew each other , and they only knew each other for four days and only loved each other for beauty. I don’t even think Romeo and Juliet truly even loved each other.
