Involving Young Children in the Decision-Making Process in Families and Schools

Even young children can be involved in decision making in the family and in schools Are children capable enough to make their own decisions without consultation of their family members? Do they qualify to participate in decisions made among adult family members? The answer to these questions lies in the fact that children do not have much know how about what is right or wrong for them; they always need some guidance and advice from their parents, elder brothers and sisters on matters related to their studies, health, eating and playing habits, etc. This paper explains the significance of children's involvement in decision making in their families and schools. To support this argument, the benefits of children involvement are explained in the light of some relevant research studies. Why should children be involved in decision making? Involving children in family and school decision making has various benefits; the biggest of all is an increased confidence level. Young children who are given a chance to share what they think or believe increase their confidence level and self-respect. If parents and family members give their pure attention to the thoughts and beliefs of their young children, there are chances that they come up with some new idea, get solution to some issue or problem, or be familiar with what was really unknown before (Donna & Kent, 2010).
