Inward Social Mobility: My Philosophy Of Higher Education

Andrew Simmons published his article for The Atlantic, “The Danger of Telling Poor Kids that College is the Key to Social Mobility” on January 16, 2014, which raises his concerns that higher education is only being promoted as an opportunity to increase their economic status, when it should be an opportunity to experience an education (Simmons). Through the use of students such as Isabella, Simmons disagrees with the way students now look at higher education and blames the educators through the students’ lives for this view. Instead, Simmons views education as an intellectual opportunity rather than a way to elevate ones economic class which is all people see when they see “higher education.” He believes that education, ambition and work ethic is how you have a satisfying life, not with how much you make. He makes the point that when economics becomes the main goal of education it’s all children begin to think about and they might not pursue something that they are truly passionate about or what they want to learn about, which then does not create an intellectually awakening experience (Simmons).

In Today’s Modern World, Higher Education or College-level education has become a valuable tool to be successful in life. Higher Education not only helps you to get up on your feet but also helps you to secure your and your families future. Higher education not only leads to a happy life but also teaches you how to overcome through some inconvenient situations in your life. Higher Level education opens a whole new world and shows you many more options that you can take in your life. Yes, I Know that colleges are expensive, and students first have to go through this hurdle first of paying for college to get the higher education they need.

“What Is College For” by Andrew Delbanco, shows the need for both a universal college system; one which caters for all of society, and one which provides a liberal education. Delbanco gives many reasoned thoughts on how, and why the college system has become restricted, to purely those of a higher socio-economic background, rather than being exclusive to people of all backgrounds. The idea of college being a platform for people to learn, advance their skills, and become whatever they want to be has seemingly diminished over time. The ideas in favor of such an educational system are put forward, but they are foreshadowed in my opinion, by the notion that people should have the same educational opportunities in life; regardless of their economic or social background. A universal education system is needed for our society to prosper, especially if it provides a liberal education; this is not just for the individuals that make up a community, but for the community, as a whole.

America’s education system is one of the most respectable, reputable and sought after commodities in our society, but it is also the most overcrowded, discriminatory, and controversial system ever established. Most people yearn for a higher education because it 's what 's expected in this society in order to get ahead. It means a better job, more money, power, prestige and a sense of entitlement. But this system has let down the children that are supposed to benefit from it. Keene asserts that in order to achieve a successful life, college should be able to make students become intuitive, studious and persistent . In Keene’s first attempts in college, she came to a conclusion that the “American Dream” has become unattainable to numerous amounts of students. The reason behind Keene’s statement is that most colleges do not challenge the minds of their students for the sake of saving students’ dignity in themselves. Therefore, these students can not achieve their full intellectual potential. Perusing higher education can be done for a few reasons; either wanting to obtain a professional degree for a job or a liberal arts degree for a set interest. Barnett believes that there will always be more to learn and a proper education should make you realize that there is always more to learn. Nussbaum’s approach to the situation states that the way the United State’s education system is built, students are almost forced into caring about learning the humanities and such. However, for some students the ability to access a quality primary education provided by public schools depends on the students socioeconomic bearing.
