Irony And Phony Language In The Poison Fish

Write to express, not to impress. This is my greatest take-away in the essay “The Poisoned Fish”.

For me, Engfish seems to be a disease - a disease that we are not aware that we have until we are given a diagnosis. In our case, we have diagnosed ourselves as we read into the lines of the essay. As I read, I found that some sentences do sound familiar. After reading, I realized that, indeed, I am guilty of Engfish.

Engfish is the pretentious and phony language that we use. Because of Engfish, ones’ writing appears to be dull and lifeless. Engfish does not have meaning nor impact. Writing should have a substance. We should not say many things that do not really say much.
