In An Hour with Abuelo, Judith Ortiz Cofer tells a story about an unappreciative grandson named Aturo, that is forced to visit his Puerto Rican grandfather in a nursing home in Brooklyn. The main theme of Cofer’s story is that you can have a fulfilling life, even if some of your hopes and dreams are crushed. The author conveys the theme through irony, and how it shapes the characters. The main example of irony in the story is when Aturo asks abuelo if he’s writing his life story, and he actually is.
