Irregular Warfare against ISIS/ISIL Before I commence to identify some of the Irregular Warfare (IW) activities seen in this war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS/ISIL), I would like to briefly define the term Irregular Warfare and describe what ISIS/ISIL really is. Irregular Warfare is described as a violent struggle among state and non-state actors for legitimacy and influence over the relevant population(s). Irregular Warfare is a deviation from a traditional form of warfare where actors may use non-traditional methods such as guerrilla warfare, terrorism, sabotage, subversion, criminal activities, and insurgency for control of relevant populations. Irregular Warfare is considered as strategically important as a traditional warfare (DODD 3000.07). ISIS/ISIL is an unrecognized state and a Jihadist militant group operating in Iraq and Syria. The group claims religious authority over all Muslims and aspires to a macro state, which includes many countries in the Middle East: Cyprus, Jordan, Kuwait, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, and part of Syria. ISIS is known for its uncompromising interpretation of Islam. The group is responsible for brutal violence against Shia Muslims and Christians. They started an attack against the Iraqi government forces in June of 2014 and many mercenaries joined the group. ISIS has gain great popularity since last year and has become a big threat to the whole world. The group was
Irregular Warfare is not a strategy. It is better defined as a military capability. Thomas Hammes articulates this point, “This conflation of counterinsurgency techniques and strategy by participants in the discussion is not helpful. The very phrase ‘counterinsurgency strategy’ confuses a method or way of fighting with a complete strategy.” Thus, while the U.S. military can be prepared for operations and capabilities dealing with irregular warfare, it should not overtake the primary strategic objectives and purpose of the military – conventional operations. Hammes further states, “The extraordinary cost and low payoff or outright defeat the United States has experienced when conducting direct, population-centric counterinsurgency
Islamic States of Iraq and Sham ISIS, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, al Qaeda in Iraq, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Islamic State, Da’ish is an active group formed c. 2014. ISIS is a terrorist group that sole purpose is pushing their beliefs on others and if their religion isn’t accepted in the appropriate way (how they expected) they then result to violence. Da’ish is the official name of the terrorist group known as ISIS, dramatically arrived and shocked many people in the West. The horrifying and violent events that have occurred since the appearance if ISIS struck fear into the hearts of people all across the world. Even though fear is an extreme emotion, the hatred that came with it is even stronger and is more Ernest.
Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which controls territory mainly in Iraq and Syria, was formed in April 2013, it was grown out of al Qaeda. The main ideology behind the organisation is based on Islamism, Salafism and Salafi Jihadism. ISIS was originally founded by Abu Musab al Zarqawi in Iraq. Before ISIL was established, Zarqawi has set up an al Qaeda franchise in Iraq during the occupation of country by the Americans. Later, however, Zarqawi became so extreme, his brutal actions in Iraq offended the jihadists, and led to al Qaeda disavowing him.
ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It is referred as a terrorist group by the United States, whereas ISIS considers themselves to be an army instead. ISIS has been responsible for many gruesome attacks all over the world one of them being the execution of Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh. They originated from Al-Qaeda in Iraq but they had big ambitions by kicking America out and setting up an Islamic state. To this date hold their land there unlike other groups like Al-Qaeda and Taliban. They have a huge support from people as their count being over 30,000 soldiers and followers. They are heavily armed, can fund themselves, have an organized infrastructure, and can cause a lot of damage. Later in 2006, their brutality lost them the support of Iraqi Sunnis who partnered with US forces to help push them out of the country. And for this incident, America takes a lot of credit for this and call it the Surge in which they helped Sunnis rise up against Al-Qaeda in Iraq’s rule. This led to Al-Qaeda in Iraq being defeated but not destroyed by only being driven out of the land they used to control and later they began rebuilding themselves by being involved in the fighting in Syria as they were trying to throw the Shiite Assad regime. Due to their brutal and severe tactics, Al-Qaeda disavowed Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Later in February 2014, the group Al-Qaeda in Iraq
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has recently attacked. How and Why? These are all questions that the public still wants to know. ISIS is a jihadist terror group that was established after the fall of Al Qaeda and the death of their leader Osama Bin Ladin. The reason why ISIS' foundation is still spreading is because their followers want "revenge" on those who have tarnished the Islamic religion. ISIS' end goal is to separate the Western and Eastern parts of the world, and even though we pride ourselves on the belief that we are all equal many people want this to happen. And ISIS takes those people to help them achieve this goal.
ISIS is identified as a Salafi extremist group, which refers to a very conservative outlook on the Islamic religion. With these abhorrent views of non-Muslims, many of the members have resorted to domestic violence, including suicide bombings and other forms of provoking fear in the innocent. Countries such as Iraq and Syria have made multiple attempts to combat ISIS, but they are currently deemed too powerful to be seized from power. A number of factors contribute to the horrific actions that are executed by the Islamic State, such as the disarmament of Saddam Hussein’s military back in the early 2000’s. Once the former Iraqi soldiers realized that they could not fight for their country, they transitioned into ISIS fighters and began to advocate for a much different cause- one that would affect millions of lives all over the
The battle for Mosul the strategies. There are over 14,00 paramilitaries and 40,000 Kurdish troops, and 5,000 ISIS fighters but they are entrenched. The coalition's strategy is to use superior manpower, firepower, and technology to throw isis out. Isis is trying to bog down the invading forces and use guerilla tactics to slow them down. They’re also employing roadside bombs and a lot of suicide car bombers.
Irregular Warfare seeks to influence beliefs, ideologies, and culture. The ultimate objective of IW is to win a battle without conventional war tactics. (TC 7-100). It is not transparent and not easily observed. IW poses threats achieved through indirect
The Islamic State, also referred as ISIS or ISIL, where its roots can be followed to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, with the financial support of Osama bin Laden and his Islamist terrorist organization, al-Qaeda, Zarqawi in 1999 formed a jihadist group, Jama’at al- Tawhid wal-Jihad (“Islamic State”). Zarqawi ruthlessly attacked civilians and destroyed religious sites in an effort to ignite a war between Sunni and Shi’a Muslims (“Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS)”). Zarqawi and his successor, who started a militant group called Islamic state in Iraq (ISI), were killed. After the death of both al-Qaeda leaders, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi took control over ISI, he preyed upon the religious divide between Sunnis and Shi’as to stir up mistrust and recruit more fighters to his group (“Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS)”). “[Baghdadi] staged a series of suicide bombings and high-profile attacks in Iraq...he also formed another militant group, the al-Nusra Front, to battle the government forces of President Bashar al-Assad”(“Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS)”). Towards the end of 2013, ISIS and ISIL began to get involved in the Syrian Civil war, and even though they are against the government, they also continue their policy of violence towards civilians and in many cases considered worse than the tyrannies inflicted by Assad’s regime and his
ISIS is a terrorist group located in the middle east, mostly stationed in Iraq. The group gained popularity in 2013, when the terrorist group Al Qaeda starting becoming less popular. ISIS has put many bomb and terrorist attacks on multiple countries including the USA. The United States has been trying to shut them down ever since, but have been unsuccessful.

CHAPTER THREE: PROGRESS TOWARDS INSURGENT ACTIVITY AS THE NEXT STAGE IN THE QUEST OF A CALIPHATE
Some people dislike the current world order, some people are doing something about it, and some will kill mercilessly to create a rupture in it—these people are ISIS. ISIS is a growing threat originating in the middle east that has killed tens of thousands of civilians in just the past couple years in an attempt to install their ideology worldwide. ISIS’ influence is currently global, and they are still growing. Fitting the profile of terrorism, ISIS has their own political and economic structures. They also follow some Islamic teachings, while having the attention of the world’s largest governments. ISIS’ structure is strange. Many world leaders don’t recognize ISIS as a country despite it having many provinces, an army, and

Also, the group is one of the first
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is the newer and more intimidating version of the famous terrorist group Al Qaeda. The group makes an appearance in the news almost every day. Over the past couple of years, they have multiplied in numbers. Not limited only to the Middle East, there are people all over the world who have proclaimed allegiance to ISIS. The Islamic extremist group has set out to destroy anything or anyone that comes in their way or do not agree with what they stand for. In the earlier years before ISIS was a serious threat, President Barack Obama had said that no American boots would be on the ground, but due to recent attacks led by ISIS that will not be the case. The correct and vital way to take down ISIS is coming to understand what they are about and what they want. Choosing an effective way to respond to these people will mean the difference between life and death for many innocent civilians and US armed servicemen and women.
