What is abuse in nursing homes? What are the warning signs? How did abuse in nursing homes start? To begin, there are different types of abuse such as: emotional, sexual, neglect, financial and physical abuse. Next, the warning signs of any type of abuse are tension between the elderly and changes in behavior. Finally, nursing homes have a long history of abuse, but because of laws and regulations there has been less cases than in the past. In conclusion, abuse in nursing homes can be avoided by knowing what type of abuse can occur, watching for warning signs, and knowing the law. To begin, abuse in nursing homes can happen in many different areas of the patient’s life. An elderly patient can be abused emotionally, sexually, financially, physically, and can be neglected. Some of these abuses begin to occur when the elderly patient becomes more physically frail, and they are less able to stand up against threats and bullying. The other abuses begin, when the patient is no longer able to take care of his/her own finances. To elaborate, an elderly patient can be abused emotionally in a few different ways. The abuse occurs when they are spoke to or treated in a way that causes them distress. It can be intimidation, yelling, threats, humiliation, and ridicules. Other forms of emotional abuse are isolating them, or ignoring them.
