April 16, 2016 Islamophobia Is America becoming more Islamophobic? Islamophobia is hatred or fear against Muslims. A A phobia is a fear or something or someone. This term entered into our English language in 1997 with, a published article by the Runnymede Trust announcing negative comments about Muslims. Some people define this as a type of racism, but it is still being argued. Islamophobic people also would target people who have Muslim names or people who look Muslim. This fear also depends on the state, not every state has this phobia. This term is described as an opinion that Muslims do not have common values with other cultures. According to author Dr. Aliya Saeed “In the United States,

According to Delic “We try to the right thing all the time..spread the message that Islam is not in a certain way as some might think..but just because one is Muslim does this don't signify that this person speaks correct about Islam, then, it is perhaps better to be silent if one does not know exactly how to respond. Hence, it is important that competent people represent Islam.”(Page 34). People think and treat Muslims all the same. They believe they are all terrorists and that is prejudice. Some Muslims in fact are prejudice to each other. When people speak about Muslims, it is all negative things. According to Runnymede Trust “Make discrimination on religious grounds unlawful...Ensure that the proposed new legislation on racial violence makes reference to religion..when sentencing offenders for crimes of violence or harassment, treat evidence of religious hatred as an aggravating factor, as already with racial violence.”(Page 39). Discrimination towards Muslims should result in a punishment, just like a regular hate crime. It is one of the police duties to prevent Islamophobia. They should pay attention to see if the crime occurred to hurt another race. In order to prevent Islamophobia in America, we would need to hear out from Muslims and Non-Muslims. To have religious freedom, it must be achieved by both sides of the party. According to Runnymede Trust “Anyway, media plays a huge part in these circumstances …show more content…
One reason why people have Islamophobia is because of all the negativity in our society. After September 11th, people did not see Muslims the same. Also, in movies Muslims are always the ones bombing something as a joke. People should think about how they feel about being stereotyped. Things like that should not be on television or in newspapers. Someone like Donald Trump, who have Islamophobia, should have some type of punishment for even making the ignorant statement. Some Muslims do not get the job that they want because of the discrimination today. This should be taught at school so, students are aware of their environment. They should be able to teach them the correct literature of Islam and not the false statements. By doing this may be all the false stereotypes could be removed from their head, because this can physically and emotionally damaged someone. Students can also help eliminate against Islamophobia. Education does help understand more about Islamophobia. Therefore, In America Muslims are not accepted and they do not fit
Following the terror attacks in The Unites States in 2001, there has been an increase in Islamophobia in the Western World. Following 9/11, respondents indicate that levels of implicit or indirect discrimination in The United States rose by 82,6% and experiences of over discrimination by 76,3% (http://jiv.sagepub.com/content/21/3/317.short). A combination of how Arabs and Muslims are portrayed in the media, with the increase of organized terrorist groups and refugees since the Arabic Spring, makes this a big political challenge today. This bibliography is written to get an overview of why Islamophobia has increased and the challenges that comes with the rise of Islamophobia.
Muslims are one of the most marginalized people in the U.S for their beliefs and their religion but after 9/11 discrimination and hate crimes against them had become even worse.Throughout the U.S people have been “Anti-Islam” and believed that the Muslim’s religion is absurd, want muslims to change their beliefs or, leave the country.According to “Anti-Islman Discourse in the United States in the Decade After 9/11:The Role of Social Conservatives and Cultural Politics”by David D.Belt on page 211-212, talks about how a post on Charisma News with an article title “Why I am Absolutely Islamophobic” was urging at the fact that Muslim-Americans needed to be deported as soon as possible ,or go under sterilization. Also Belt talks about one of Bush’s family friend being,Franklin Graham saying that he thinks the muslim’s religion is “very evil “and “wicked”.One last example a man named Gabriel had said Islam is the real enemy of America and that we supposedly “we will be doomed in war if we don’t realize it”. People are so brainwashed it honestly insane and very ignorant at the things people think about Muslims, its barbaric. They believe what Muslims believe in and their religion is wrong and they should switch to “Christianity” because it is the “American way “ or have them deported because the do not belong there and are “terrorist”.
Although African Americans and women were being discriminated in the 19th century, in the 21st century, this type of attitude has now transitioned toward a specific religion. Islamophobia, also known as the fear of Islam, has become odiously popular after the despicable 9/11 attacks. Due to terrorists claiming they are of Islamic descent , society has
What is and what isn’t Islamophobia? The term is used to describe prejudice against, hatred towards, or fear of the religion of Islam or Muslims. It came into wide usage in 1997, upon the publication of a report by the Runnymede Trust, a nonprofit English think tank. This report described, “closed views” of Islam,
Americans fear that the terrorists would some days attack their country, and kill them. This fear is vastly increased after the 2001 attack in New York City. Since then, most Muslims in America have been investigated by spying their phone talks, screening their profiles and so on . Although everybody knows that Muslim extremists are the only cause, they tend to relate it to all other innocent Muslims and discriminate them. It is not only affected Muslim adults but also their kids. They wanted to quit from schools because they were consistently called murderers. Worse than this, they received violent acts such as kicking, bullying just because they are born Muslims. The racism today is obviously shown in President Donald Trump’s traveling ban on seven Muslim countries which is later changed to six by excluding Iraq. It prevents all Muslims from these countries to travel to the US (Henderson & Graham). Even though the President wants to strengthen the security and makes Americans safe, the ban do affect thousands Muslims who do not involve in terrorism, and shows the discrimination against this
Throughout the years there have been several hate crimes or laws put in place to put down the muslim community, two of the most recent and most controversial examples of discrimination towards the muslim community would be president donald j. Trumps attempt to pass both a muslim registry and a ban on all muslims coming in the U.S. thankfully the bills weren't passed, this however does show the level in which some americans are willing to go to in order to remove a “threat to society” this also show the change in americans psychi making racism and discrimination socially acceptable more and more when even the government is making it seem acceptable to discriminate thus increasing the amount of hate crimes towards
According to the article, "Islamophobia," the author Carl Coon simply defines what Islamophobia in America is. He explains, "Islamophobia is raising its ugly head in the US... it 's beginning to metastasize into a virulent form of xenophobia, an eruption of the atavistic human tendency to pick sides and then if necessary fight to the death for the side one chooses, and to not reason why."
Although Islamophobia stems from religious differences and oppression today's it is present because way too many people have the perception that Muslims and anyone from the Middle East is a terrorist and has an evil agenda. "Although every Muslim is not a terrorist, every terrorist is a Muslim" (Gul,2011). This view of Islamic and Middle Eastern people is present for many reasons. One being how they are being portrayed in the media. Whenever something ISIS related is reported the views of non radical Islamic people are rarely shown and if it is it's a two or three minute segment (Obeidallah, 2014). Of all violent crimes committed in the US each year the crimes of Muslims are bring to public attention more than others yet they only account for 160 of thousands (cite). In most Hollywood movies you will find nothing but Muslims being portrayed as the assailant. Another cause for Islamophobia in our society is how the government portrays people in predominantly Islamic communities. The US is constantly in need of oil and many other natural resources that are in abundance in the Middle East. With someone these countries refusing to share for the proposed prices the US has waged war against them to gain control over these
Since the dawn of human civilization, there has been an unfortunate but natural tendency to marginalize and oppress those belonging to "the other"--those not in power, not part of the most popular group and those who are different. One such manifestation of this fear of the different is Islamophobia--the "dread or hatred of Islam--and therefore [the] fear or dislike of all or most Muslims." Although the exact word "Islamophobia" was brought to public awareness in 1997 after an academic journal from the British Runnymede Report, it has existed for many years prior to the journal, as a term to describe the experiences of the oppressed and discriminated sections of Muslim communities. The simmering prejudice towards Muslims gained ferocious momentum
According to NBC News, following the September 11 attacks in 2001, there were four hundred eighty one reported anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States, totaling an average of 40 per month. The number of these attacks continues to rise today. Muslims seem to have targets on their backs. The arrow pointed at them is known as Islamophobia, the hatred and prejudice against the religion of Islam.
Islamophobia has always been prevalent in the past 50 years in the U.S., and especially NYC. Since 1950, American courts used the excuse of being a Muslim in order to deny people citizenship (Wendeiss, BBC News). Ever since the tragedy of 9/11, Islamophobia has grown rapidly in the past two decades at a pace that has never been seen before.
Due to the current political state of this country, the fear of Islam has been magnified especially, when the president of the United State has an anti-Islamic campaign. Islamophobia is the fear of Muslim identified individuals, this is a topic most people avoid because it is both religion and a political issue. In my time with Housing & Residential Education, I have seen many hot topics and Islamophobia is not one of those topics. The fear of Islam will be around and will not go away until we shed the light on it or bring more awareness. I am tired of feeling like a terrorist because of my identity or getting stopped at the airport because I am young, educated, and a Muslim man. My female Muslim sisters and friends have it worse than I do
Islam is a monotheistic religion, centered around the teachings of the Qu’ran and serving Allah (meaning God in Arabic). However, this Abrahamic religion has been harshly discriminated against in the United States for years. Most prominently throughout the last twelve years, post September 11th, 2001. Unfortunately, issues such as socialization through the media, power distribution, religious ignorance, stereotyping and visible differences have contributed to the ill attitudes towards Muslims. This paper will examine how Americans have been socialized in islamophobia within the United States.
After September 11, 2001, Islamophobia began increasing in America. The people of America started to discriminate and marginalize people who were Muslim or even people who looked as if they practiced the Muslim faith. This discrimination started before September 11, 2001, but after the terrorist attack, it got increasingly worse. The people of America need to recognize their own responsibility and feel guilty for the suffering of these people of the Muslim faith. A majority of the time, it is Christians or white people who are hectoring people of the Muslim faith. This is ironic, because the Bible teaches that you are supposed to love one another and treat people how you want to be treated. One of the sole teachings of Christianity is to be kind towards one
“Islamophobia is prejudice towards discrimination against Muslims due to their religion, or perceived religion, national, or ethnic identity associated with Islam because Muslims have different beliefs and values”. (Islamophobia wikipedia 1) Like anti-semitism, racism, and homophobia. Islamophobia describes mentality and actions that domain an entire class of people. Jews, African-Americans, and other populations throughout history have faced prejudice and discrimination. Islamophobia is simply another reincarnation of this bigotry. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary,a phobia is an exaggerated, usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation. It may be difficult to determine or communicate the source of this fear, but it exists. From this definition we can see how is so unfair to connect the word phobia to Islam specially because the word Islam in arabic means peace and safety. All that means that a lot of people don’t know nothings about Islam and the unknown can easily provoke fear.
