Playing sports in high school and college helps athletes build strong character traits and good habits that will help them throughout their lives. Athletes understand the importance of being on time, working hard, not giving up, and working as a team. All of these things help athletes become better people. Many employers like to hire former athletes because these character traits make for great
One of the greatest lessons I have learned as a high school athlete has been how to overcome adversity and to be resilient after failure. As with any sport, particularly basketball, many valuable character traits and qualities are obtained such as: an incredible work ethic, a competitive nature, and the ability to be an effective leader. If I had not been a basketball player, I would be lacking some of the important characteristics that make me a well rounded and whole person.

Fans of this association range from toddlers to senior citizens. The men employed by the NBA are friends, fathers, husbands and sons, but some people these men are heroes. When I was younger, basketball was all I wanted to play, it just looked like so much fun. In fifth grade I had my parents sign me up for CYB, then in sixth grade I tried out for middle school basketball and played all the way up until ninth grade. In middle school when I was in eighth grade I was awarded the captain position and that helped me build leadership and responsibility. All of the players especially the younger ones knew they could always come to me at any time if they needed anything or help with anything. High school basketball was a lot different than middle school. In middle school I was one of the star players so I played a lot but in high school that changed. I sat the bench a lot that taught me patience and understanding even
Basketball seems to get into your blood. It is said by those who play, "You eat, you sleep and you play basketball." When I was a little girl all I wanted to be was a professional basketball player. I couldn't count how many times I pounded that dumb ball in our driveway until it was too dark to see, then I would play for hours more by the porch light. Now I realize that was only childish insanity. Back then they didn’t even have a girls’ profession basketball league in the states. However, that didn't stop me from walking away empty handed. One thing I learned was how to prepare oneself for life. Well, at least, how to prepare oneself for a game.

INTRODUCTION: “I have failed over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded” a quote by Michael Jordan. How many of you believe failure is a prerequisite to success? , how many of you believe that the difficulties and obstacles you’ve faced changed who you are as a person? well, life is not a wish granting factory , it will feel long and tough , eventually at one point you will fail , we all do , but it’s not about failing it’s about how you perceive failure , that is what defines you as a person , Samuel Becket once
The experiences of failing and trying again provide a learning process that can translate to greater achievement in school. “A controlled longitudinal study found that adolescents who participated in sports showed improved grade point averages, had increased attachment to school, and were more likely to attend college” (Larson, Reed, and Sean Seepersad). The persistence children learn while playing sports will carry on in other parts of life, such as learning in school, leading to continual success. While playing basketball, I began to grow more mentally and socially. I stayed more active in the games and reacted faster; I would be ready to block a sudden dash to our hoop. In other activities, such as math, I began solving equations quicker and was more focused. Also, as a child I was a quiet and shy. When playing the game, I could not just stand back; I had to get into the action by challenging the ball or trying to get a pass. As my confidence developed, I became more bold and outgoing in other parts of my life.

The three skills I’ve learn because of basketball was communication, hard work, and teamwork. All of these skills helped me make new friends made me more confident. The skills helped me grow more as a person and sculpted me to be the way I am today. Without these skills that I’ve learned I would still be shy and not have as many friends as I have today
