Becoming a Politician
There is nothing more saddening and painful to watch than witnessing bullets being removed from the bodies of children as young as three-year-old with most of their family members taken away from them as a consequence of a war they have nothing to do with. This was the situation in the medical unit of the Mrajeeb Al Fhood refugee camp, which was an available safe haven for refugees who were fleeing from the detrimental effects of the war in Syria. This war represented one example of the existing conflict and crisis that was in the Middle East. I witnessed the loss of hope and separation of families by death during my time in this camp, while working as a volunteer. Thus, I came into close contact with the patients in the ward at the camp as I carried out my assigned duty of helping clean the ward in order to ensure that these patients had a clean environment to recover from their injuries. It was during my time at this camp that I knew that I have a duty to make a difference to change the situation in the Middle East. This is the first time that the idea of being a diplomat crept into my mind. I felt that if I were to hold such a position, I would be in the most appropriate place to oversee to the end of these unjustified deaths and injuries that caused many innocent people pain and loss.
A diplomat as an agent of peace and reconciliation can facilitate the bringing together of the differing sides instigating this crisis in this region. This is the
Throughout this course thus far we have generically discussed the various models of mediation(in particular facilitative),skills and tasks needed by a mediator to conduct a successful mediation. The facilitative approach we have been studying, via theory and in-class exercises has afford us some great insight into mediating into a variety of domestic conflicts from family to business disputes. However, there is a whole other subfield in mediation ,which we have not discussed and that is international mediation. International mediation also has a variety of forms. Cases for mediation can range from a conflict between two states, an ethnic conflict that, has bought violence within a particular state, or perhaps a business dispute between
Political socialization begins early on in life and is an ongoing process affecting individuals throughout. It is how people eventually identify personal beliefs and expectations in American politics. These political views can include our level of patriotism, faith in the democratic system, standards by which we hold governing bodies, and opinions regarding public policies. From the playground to the classroom, the office to the dinner table, much of our lives affect our political opinions. The most easily identified agents of this are family, schooling, peers, mass media, political parties and religious influences. Furthermore, these means indoctrinate us in the political society through four basic
Running for office is not the easiest thing where people search their platform. But I think it is more than the one’s platform. After reading many articles, it was determined that there is no fixed cost for running for office in Texas. According to data provided in the The Texas Tribune, the amount of money spends by the person running for office in the Texas ranged from $0 to more than $1million dollars. To determine how much a candidate spends per vote, there are three different variables and they are: 1 how much a candidate fundraises, how much a candidate spends and how many votes a candidate receives. To run for the office, one of the main obstacles would be to
As the rifle and machine gun fire exchanges in the Syrian Civil War not only lives are lost but many innocent men, women and children are left in need of emergency care. Cecily Hilleary, a traveling journalist for VOA World News, mentions “the United Nations estimates the civil war raging in Syria has left more than 2.5 million people in dire need of food, water, drugs and medical supplies,” not including the already 25,000, and counting, deceased from the war (VOA par. 9). The medical aid is minimal in Syria due to the low number of volunteers and medical staff. Cecily tells the stories of crowded hospitals with over 250-350 beds being piled up upon with hurt Syrian individuals, many being innocent women and
1. List and explain the four main features and functions of constitutions. Be sure to associate your answers with specific models from countries explored in this course.
Growing up in Iraq, I endured my homeland’s journey through a difficult period in its history. No one was unaffected: civilians’ lives were disrupted by years of wars and detrimental economic sanctions, but amid the destruction, I saw the good in my community. I witnessed a massive humanitarian effort led by healthcare professionals, as physicians worked to meet the medical needs in my town. My dreams were shaped by this exposure, and ever since, I’ve hoped to join these doctors in their efforts.
Against a backdrop of an ever increasing number of internal conflicts and the crash of conventional means of conflict resolution to attain a resilient peace in divided societies, this paper presents a two-track approach to peacekeeping and conflict resolution. One track is represented by peacemaking, defined as endeavors at finding a resolution to the issues in conflict at the political leadership level. The other track, peacebuilding, refers to contact proposals at the grassroots level targeting at the enhancement of intergroup relations. After a conversation of role of grassroots peacebuilding in a peace process some groundwork findings on the bond between peacemaking and peacebuilding in two divided societies, Palestine and Israel, will be discussed.
Humanitarian crises and international politics goes hand in hand. One can cause the other, while the only way to fix the other is to rely on politics. This paper will highlight the cause of genocide, violent massacres and crisis, how to solve them, and key roles politicians and nations must take up wholeheartedly in order to make a difference. Personal and political reconciliation must occur in the parties involved ever want to have a mutual co existence.
It is also important to note the contribution of Bush & Folger (2005), that, “A Mediator is someone who intervenes to help when people are in the midst of conflict.” P. 15.
It has been four years and is a lone crisis’ that is most sought to be assisted. Firstly, in order to contribute, there must be awareness and realization of the fact that this issue is not solely affecting Syria and Syrians. People need to care and talk about it. They have to know that this crisis is not independent. Secondly, people need to contribute and support Syrian Refugees: whether a generous donation or a small donation from many, it will impact the lives of several families. These small actions can lead to bringing clean water and food to people, improving shelters, giving families some basic household needs and attempting to provide coping methods for some of the terrors that young children and adults have been faced with. Both knowledge and provision can create global response. This will bring resources to refugees who need it to survive and aid when executing the reconstruction of
An Imperfect Offering is a powerful personal memoir from a James Orbinski, a Canadian who has spent most of his adult life in front-line humanitarian work in the world's worst conflict zones. Despite its dark chapters, it is also a hopeful story about the emergence of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) as a new and independent agent of civil society, and the possibilities of making the world a better place. In “An Imperfect Offering”, James Orbinski tells the story of people who have been harmed by war, and humanitarian workers who have come to heal them when possible. He engages in deep reflection on the nature of humanitarian response and the many threats to this most human activity. He has sharp criticism for governments who act to cause
Since the beginning of American history, those who are wealthy with, who have connections, and who are privileged, have the most control/influence over who gets elected into office. These people are the business owing, monopoly owning, type of people. These are the people who have thousands even millions to put into an election, in order to help candidates gain popularity points. No, this is not fair because not everybody has thousands or millions to waste on an election, but that is they things go. The way that we can unite, and come together as citizens is to go against these big businesses and business men.
Although volunteers for Medecins Sans Frontiers are commonly stationed in various countries with a dire healthcare worker shortage, regions with refugee camps and internally displaced persons are also a focus for this organization. Refugees and internally displaced persons often come from war torn regions and live in close confines with poor sanitation and limited resources. These living situations become a breeding ground for diseases and other health issues like malnutrition, yet the individuals lack access to any sort of healthcare. The organization also responds quickly when regions suddenly experience an increased need for healthcare, for example in times of an epidemic or a natural disaster. Medecins Sans Frontiers’ involvement across its varying regions and their attempt to address a broad spectrum of healthcare truly show how altruistic the organization is to individuals regardless of race, gender, or religion.
Politics. It is possibly the most hated word in the English language. Most people hate politics and government without really knowing what they are. Many different definitions of politics exist. One definition defines politics as the conflict between groups over something they both want. Another similar definition calls politics the "who gets what, when, and how." Government is defined as the institution that has the enforceable right to control people’s behavior. But why do people hate politics and politicians? Is it because politicians cannot be trusted, or maybe because they spend too much money? Whatever the reasons are for hating politics and government, both are needed as a mechanism for people to protect themselves. Possibly, if
From the time I was a little girl I was always interested in politics. At the age of four I began attending school board meeting with my grandfather, by the time I turned 10 I frequented city hall meeting so often most of the Aldermen knew me by name. My love for politics carried over into my college carrier, but as I sat in American Government, national security, and political philosophy, nothing grasped my attention as much as the subject matter of state and local government. Growing up I understood the impact of state and local government, but some how still fell into the common notion that the federal government holds all the power. After the course my passion for politics on a state level grew, I participated in the Tennessee State Intercollege Legislature, and had the opportunity t to experience first hand how senate and house committees work. With state and local government I just scratch the surface of how municipals work, with this course I hope to further my understanding on how urban municipals operate as well as increase my political savvy and literacy. In addition to what I hope to lean in a more educational sense, I hope to in prove on my time management. This is not a physical class, but I will have to stay as focused and detected to this class just as much as I do the others.
