Billy
Dog or person? Person or dog? After reading A Boy’s Song, everyone ponders this question. Personally, I think Billy is a person. You might disagree . But after reading this essay, you just might change your mind.
OK. So you think Billy is a dog. I’m gonna break it to you, evidence shows he’s not. First of all, look who it’s written by. James Hogg the shepherd. In his biography, he states he has a dog named Sirrah. If I remember correctly, that name cannot be confused with Billy. Yeah he might have another dog, but James would’ve at least mentioned him.
We are to reason number two. Look at the title. A Boy’s Song. That kinda shows Billy is a boy. I mean, if Billy was a dog, the title would be, A Boy and Dog’s song.
A blizzard with deafening roars of wind and whitening snow settled in and Billy’s dogs were no where to be found. Even though the group wanted to head back to camp, Billy kept looking for his dogs and used determination with a little help with people from the camp to obtain his dogs back. The theme, determination, helped Billy numerous amount of times to save someone from getting hurt or killed in the novel.
Billy Joe Bob’s dog’s name is Rupuss. Rupuss is a beautiful German Shepherd. His birthday is July 1st and Billy Joe Bob got him December 25th for Christmas from his best friend, Jensen. Rupuss love Billy Joe Bob and Billy Joe Bob love Rupuss.
To the casual eye, Billy looks like the typical bad boy. A boy that ran away from home, showing his rebellious tendencies. A boy that would most certainly be a bad influence over anyone. However, as we take a closer look into Billy's true personality,
Second of all, Billy is determined to have enough money so he can get the two hunting hounds. Billy will do anything until he gets enough money for the hounds. For example, “Billy caught crawfish, trapped minnows with an old trap, picked huckleberries, and etc.”(22).Billy really wants the two dogs that's why is he is raising money by selling food, to the fisherman and his grandpa. Therefore, Billy is tired of waiting that why he is “on his way to Tahlequah, and is going to get his dogs”(30). This shows that he is determined to bring his
First, in chapter 2 it says, “I was in bed one night trying to figure out a way I could get some dogs...” This shows the theme because Billy is not giving up on getting his dogs. Also because Billy is thinking about something he can’t go a while without thinking about, just like the quote states.
Society knew Billy was different and because of this, people outcasted him and treated him poorly. This relates to Harding’s quote because the way society treated Billy, led to other major problems, such as his relationship with his mother. Billy’s mother tried to shelter him from this by denying him independence and not supporting his growth and development. Parents have the responsibility to toughen up their children to prepare them for the real world, but Billy’s mother did not do this. She created a great co-dependence for Billy and he did not know any better. Billy suffered from depression and had self-inflicted “razor-blades” and “cigarette burns” (137) as proof. This was probably caused by loneliness and bullying his mother failed to harden him up for. By the time he became a patient in the hospital, Billy was not ready. He did not know what to do without his mother’s help and was not able to stand up for himself. By not defending himself, he allowed people to take advantage
His father knew that he was chopping down the largest tree in the woods. However, he did not supervise Billy, so he must have believed Billy was ready for a task like this. By chopping down this tree, Billy was learning persistence and independence, two very important life skills. In addition, by chopping down this tree, he was growing into and proving himself a man. Chopping down a tree is work for a grown man, and though he was only 10 years old, Billy chopped down that tree. Billy showed that he was not a boy anymore; he was a
Caitlin loves Billy’s character even though he is homeless. Caitlin is fascinated with Billy’s character rather than what he has and his status. Caitlin is engrossed in Billy because he is clean. Billy keeps his clothes clean, himself clean and his carriage clean. In the passage Billy’s cave (p. 62).Caitlin says that his carriage is clean and warm. Caitlin is also attracted to billy’s character because he is not a normal hobo. Billy is smart, clean, polite and calm. In the passage Caitlin and mopping (p. 35).Caitlin says that Billy as ‘so calm’ when he exited McDonalds. This shows that Caitlin enjoys Billy’s company despite Billy not having any
Billy is a small boy who loves the outdoors and just has no dogs. He gets disappointed and begins asking his father if he could have one but there just too expensive to buy. So Billy gathers up enough money after his grandfather gave him a magazine advertisement for too hound pups that are for sale for only $40. “Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power,” says Lao-Tzu. The rabbits in Watership Down that are aspiring leaders deal with a constant battle that relates perfectly to Lao-Tzu’s quote. Some gain power through their stature, others through their wit, but the truly effective leaders use the ideal attributes both from themselves and the rabbits they are leading. The desire for power in this novel is exhibited through aspiring leaders that lead in their own best interest and those who lead in the best interest of their community
It tends to draw on and on, and the book itself is relatively short in word count, but as you read it, it seems to slow down. However, the story is original and does reflect the atmosphere of the approximate 1920’s, as the story was written forty years later. The tale is moving, in a sense, because it is centered around a boy, his dogs, and their mutual love for each other. It is also about how Billy hunts and skins raccoons with his dogs for fun, but if that is something you can overlook, then so be it. Billy, being the main character, has many good and bad points, and is overall a good person.
The trauma Billy has experienced is shown in an absurd light. He believes himself to be time traveling. He believes that he has been abducted by aliens who look like toilet plungers, and that they are keeping him in a
“Billy initiates the music in his life. He has the potential to triumph over his environment. The lyrics of the soundtrack are also noteworthy, as they imply that Billy is a born dancer.” (Lancioni, 2006, 718)

For this assignment, I decided to focus my research on Greek immigrants. As I was reading page 797, I noticed the author mentioned, Greek restaurant owners provided a selection of American and Greek cuisines. It was also mentioned, “Greek immigration most profoundly impacted mainstream foodservice” (pg.797). I found these facts to be of great importance when discussing food choices, therefore I wanted to do more research on Greek Immigrants.
