Is Brutus A Hero Or A Villain

“Et tu, Brute?” Caesar uttered his last words as he witnesses Brutus stab him, “Then fall Caesar!” As Brutus was that of the most trusted of Caesar. Political extremism was pushed onto Caesar which convinced him to conspire with envious senators and ultimately, participated in the brutal assassination of Caesar, who was ruthlessly stabbed 33 times, so he could become active ruler in Rome in the works of William Shakespeare derived from the play Julius Caesar. With what is being claimed, Brutus couldn’t possibly have been an honest man but a traitor.

Brutus was in fact a betrayer, and while he did feel sympathy for Caesar after he died, he killed him along with the other conspirators and even started a war of sorts in Rome, causing many to fall in battle- himself included. While Brutus was persuaded by fake letters, no man should be as gullible as him to completely switch sides on only the basis of three anonymous letters that were stuck to his window. Brutus was a villain who felt that he was the hero, more concerned about the safety of the government he loved rather than the friend that he loved.

Brutus is one of Julius Caesar’s best friends and is viewed as either a patriot or betrayer. Brutus takes Caesar’s life claiming that it’s for the benefit of Rome just as Caesar is about obtain the Roman Empire essentially. I view Brutus as a betrayer and nothing more than a murderer because of his actions and the blood of Julius Caesar that is undoubtedly staining his hands. Some might disagree and claim him to be a patriot because he fought for what Rome really needed and saved them from Caesar’s rule that would only worsen Rome’s situation and the daily lives of the Roman citizens. Brutus fought for what he believed in that is undeniable, but it’s up to you and me to decide whether or not those beliefs made him into a betrayer or patriot.

Marcus Brutus does qualify as the tragic hero in Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. A tragic hero is a good or even great man and thus wins our sympathy causing catharsis. A tragic hero displays hamartia— the hero makes a mistake causing the downfall of his fortune. A tragic hero usually brings suffering and death to other characters, even a whole country. Finally, a tragic hero goes into a situation in which there is no getting out of because of the decisions he has made. Marcus Brutus has many characteristics of a tragic hero thus making him the tragic hero in Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.

In the world today people consider a hero to be someone like Superman or Spider-Man. In the dictionary a hero is considered or defined as a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for their brave deeds and noble qualities. Though a hero is thought to be free of mistakes they all have tragic flaws like everyone else. A tragic flaw is explained by Aristotle’s definition, which says that: a tragic hero as a character of great reputation and prosperity whose misfortune is not due to depravity or vice, for the hero is a virtuous man or woman but to an error in judgment resulting from a tragic flaw. I personally think that Brutus was a tad bit of both. If i were to choose just one i would pick Patriot.I choose patriot because , Brutus killed Caesar for the sake of rome. I do believe that Brutus could have taken a much better route and not result to killing. Brutus killed Caesar because its what he felt was right for the place he loved, Rome.

In life, people often look up to leaders and rulers in respectful viewpoints; whether it be out of bias or out of understanding. Leaders are at the top looking down upon us because of what they believe in, how commanding their words are, and the trust the people invest in them. Julius Caesar was neither a kind leader nor was he an understanding ruler; from his egotistical actions, his violent attacks and scandals with Cleopatra, and his controversy throughout Rome as leader in all its simplicity, I am undoubtedly certain Julius Caesar was a villain in disguise.

One of the critical attitudes regarding the problem of Brutus’s failure is that Brutus is a cold, unappealing leader who refuses to heed the counsel of other. This is proved otherwise in more ways than one. when Brutus wants one of his men to kill him during the battle of Philippi, his soldiers are loyal to him, none of which want to kill their leader, showing that he was in fact a good leader, because if he was not, when given the opportunity to kill him, his men would have taken that chance. Even when Strato agrees to kill him, Strato has to clasp hands with Brutus once more before he can stomach the idea of killing his leader.

Brutus was the bravest hero in Julius Caesar. Brutus also possesses an importance or high rank. Brutus is a good decision maker, and here is why I think this is a fact.

A hero is someone who is admired for their noble qualities. For example Odysseus in the story has the necessary qualities to classify him as a hero. Odysseus shows determination throughout the book, his entire journey back from war is all determination to get home. He exhibits strength and great powers at many different points like, when he is killing the suitors. Odysseus is brave even when times are rough, he mostly can push through anything. These traits can be seen as heroic today because they all demonstrate not given up, pushing for what you want and persevering through the tough times. Odysseus is coming home from the Trojan War but faces many obstacles on his way home. Once he finally reaches Ithaca he reunites with his son,

“A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction,” (Aristotle). Aristotle believed that a character was a tragic hero if they made a decision or decisions that lead to their death in the end. I do believe Brutus was a tragic hero .Brutus had a need to be in power and also the decisions he made to get that caused his death in the end and also his tragic flaw made him a tragic hero.

What is a hero? The technical, dictionary definition of a hero according to the EOD (English Oxford Dictionary) is “a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities” (“Hero”). While this seems like a fairly reasonable definition, do all heroes possess all of these qualities?
