The relationship between government and citizen is one much contested throughout history. Which is best: oligarchy, anarchy, democracy, or autocracy? However, due to mankind’s selfish nature, policymakers will inevitably pass unjust legislation. Thus, a republic’s welfare does not rely on absolute obedience to just and unjust laws alike. Rather, it permits civil disobedience, defined as the act of opposing a law one considers unjust and peacefully disobeying it while accepting the consequences. Over the course of the United States of America, citizens have had the gracious ability to fight for what they believe is right. Written into the First Amendment of the Constitution is the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition, granting citizens the right to fight for what they believe in. Some people do not realize the extent of how much more freedom America gives its citizens and how the right to even peacefully protest is a right that is sometimes taken for granted. Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society in that over the years it has given those who have stood for what they believe, the rights that they stood for.

Peaceful resistance to a law is exactly what a free society needs in order to manage the "free" status. If we were forced to obey every law without a say, we would not be a truly free society. Civil disobedience is one of the most positive impacts the people can have on their own government, especially one that claims to be one of the people, for the people, and by the people. When the people disagree with a law they have always and will always have a right to stand against it. It is a vital part of an American's first amendment rights: the freedom of speech (among other things).

Civil disobedience can be a powerful tool for challenging unjust laws. Many people throughout the world peacefully protest against a rule/law by not following orders. When punished, protesters would either get a fine or thrown in jail. Civil disobedience has impact our society in a positive way from protesting against laws that have violated rights or denying the freedom everyone deserves.
