Is College Degree Necessary For Success?

As technology evolves and the price of higher education increases, alternatives to College are considered. Some people don’t believe a college education is necessary to be successful. Instead, they decide to go into business for themselves, using the skills and crafts that they 've developed on their own time to become entrepreneurs. In this day and age, it is easier than ever to learn from the comfort of ones home and actually get a degree in something with a high pay out, such as a real estate license or accounting degrees. But what social skills will be gained from sitting in pajamas on the couch? In college, you not only finish with a degree, you get real world experience. College is necessary for success and survival.

Right now in our society a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. We are practically raised and conditioned to believe that one needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying that says "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance." One implication of college is that it’s the only route you can take to be successful. Charles Murray’s article “Are Too Many People Going to College” disagrees and believes that college really just prepares you for life. With still good focus towards a career but, there are many circumstances where individuals can get equal experiences going straight into the workforce. Murray uses the quote from John Stuart Mill who in 1867 told his students at St.Andrews that “Universities are not intended to teach the knowledge required to fit men for some special mode of gaining their livelihood” to help promote his argument. Colleges and Universities are windows of knowledge that many people try to break, in doing so, people are ready for the next stage of their life. But not many have the option to go the world where knowledge is everything, and end being a simple worker all his life. People would judge a person for not having a degree, bachelor and many more. But do they ever think that colleges or universities are really preparing you for any jobs, does a piece of paper worth a lot now a days. I believe that college is very important for our life, but not many of us know if we are really learning something while being in college. Nemko argues that it is most likely that a person that is at the bottom half of their graduating class in high school is not going to earn a diploma while in college. Nemko also says that a person that has been to college could end up working a job that a non-college graduate would be working because of the degree that a person has is useless. Many may think that a person that has a college degree is better off, but a person that didn’t graduate may work harder, and be more motivated in life to accomplish the goals they have set for themselves. According to the website, The Institute for College Access and Success, 69% of all public school college graduates in 2014 had an average of $28,950 in student loan debt. In other words, the majority of people that attend college turn out to have tens of thousands of dollars in debt by the time that they graduate. That statement is completely mind boggling. Considering that college is quickly becoming a requirement to obtain any job at all, let alone a reasonable job, there needs to be options to assist students to not only attend college and earn a degree, but stay out of debt as well. There should not be such a large amount of young adults in America forced into debt due to college being necessary to obtain a decent job. In order to succeed in forcing students into debt, the majority of colleges and loan departments pressure these students into taking out loans that they do not actually need by misinforming and neglecting important information the students and their families. The path to success has been remodeled over the years by different generations due to the developing mind. College does educate and challenges people to do more and think more. We can clearly see this example because the developers of this debate are both college graduates. Later on in life more and more questions will be asked and answered.
