Dancers not only study ballet, but they must take contemporary and character dance class, learn to partner, and perform short extracts of famous ballets, called variations. Not only is dancing very challenging to pursue, dancers are at risk of incurring many injuries. According to World Dance studies, 80% of all dancers incur a major injury within their dance career. 93% of all dance instructors quit their professional dancing careers because of an injury. High amount of injuries in professional dancing is induced by high levels of fatigue, little time for rest, inadequate healing techniques and high stress levels. All those factors can produce burn out periods when dancers have decreased strength, coordination, cognitive and immune functions.Furthermore, dancers train harder than most professional athletes. According to NFL football player Steve McLendon, ballet is the hardest part of his training regimen. Despite McLendon’s bulky muscles, his dance teacher pushes him to achieve some of this art form’s strength and grace. The mixture of aerobic and anaerobic exercise in a ballet class provides a full-body workout which builds up muscles that are otherwise rarely used.
