The United States, is it a monolingual country? If asked most people would claim that English is the mother-tongue of the population of those living in the United States of America. Is this claim accurate? Most people in the United States without access to data and information would probably say that English is the norm, but according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau Report this claim may prove Americans incorrect. According to Hyon B. Shin and Robert A. Kominski, authors of the selection, “Language Use in the United States: 2007,” data is provided that may prove that the English language may not be the norm in all homes in the United States. Shin and Kominski, demographic statisticians for the Census Bureau provide disparaging data that may prove otherwise that the United States is not a monolingual country. A disparage in survey results from 1980 to 2007 from the American Community Survey (ACS) prompted Shin and Kominski to take a closer look into the language differential. Throughout our great nation, much of the concentration of language differential may be in part to concentrations of internal migration, employment opportunities, and other family situations that may facilitate the diffusion of language groups (Shin & Kominski, 2007, page 581). For example, I live in a rural area of middle Georgia that is well known for its migrant workers. These workers move from area to area according to what crop is being harvested at the time, thus bringing in individuals that speak both Spanish and English.
