Football has been America’s favorite sport for many years now, but there is no question that football is a dangerous sport. Over the past few years, concussions have become a major issue for the NFL and just for the game of football in general. This is mainly due to the new research and findings of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a brain disease believed to be caused by repeated head trauma such as concussions. The brain of an individual who suffers from CTE gradually deteriorates and will over time end up losing mass (Puiu, 2017). There are four stages of CTE. Out of 202 brains of deceased football players studied, CTE was diagnosed in 177 of them, a number that includes NFL, college and even high school athletes (Mez, Daneshvar, & Kiernan 2017). The test found CTE in “110 of 111 brains from former NFL players; 48 of 53 college players; nine of 14 semi-professional players, seven of eight Canadian Football League players and three of 14 high school players (Mez, Daneshvar, & Kiernan 2017). Given these numbers, there is a reason to believe that these CTE symptoms are expected to be found in roughly half of NFL football player total population (Engber 2017). Of the 110 players diagnosed with CTE, 44 of them were defensive or offensive lineman, 20 of them were running backs, 7 of them were quarterbacks, 13 of them were linebackers, 17 of them were defensive backs, 5 of them were wide receivers, 2 of them were tight ends, and there was one punter and one kicker (Joe Ward, Josh Williams And Sam Manchester 2017).
