The famous Elizabethan playwright, Shakespeare, wrote Hamlet. From the very start of Hamlet, the main character Hamlet seems to be very different then the rest of the people around him. Throughout the play, Hamlet appears to be absolutely crazy, but what everyone around him does not know is that Hamlet told his best friend from college, Horatio, that he might act crazy. I believe that Hamlet is feigning madness to be able to lead people to think he is crazy while he proves that his uncle is guilty and to successfully get revenge. Hamlet wants to get revenge on his uncle, King Claudius, for his killing of Hamlet Sr., Hamlet Jr.’s father. This ghost then proceeded to apparently only talk to Hamlet to tell him that his new father, King Claudius, was indeed the one who killed Hamlet Sr., by poisoning him through his ear while he was sleeping in a garden. The Ghost of Hamlet Sr. wants his son to get revenge on his uncle for murdering his own brother and then marrying his brother’s wife, Queen Gertrude. He tells Hamlet, “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murther” (Act I, Scene V). After the encounter with his father/the ghost, Hamlet tells Horatio he is, “to put an antic disposition on” (Act I, Scene V). The King and Queen are worried about Hamlet’s ongoing depression. However, they do not know the cause of his state has to do with them. Polonius, one of the king’s advisors, believes that Hamlet’s madness is for his love for Polonius’s own daughter, Ophelia. Ophelia gave her father a letter that Hamlet wrote for her. In the letter he says, “O dear Ophelia, I am ill at these numbers. I have not art to reckon my groans, but that I love thee best, O most best, believe it. Adieu” (Act II, Scene II). Ophelia truly believes that Hamlet is absolutely in love with her, but she isn’t sure if she feels the same
