Why a Leader Shouldn’t Make Themselves Seem Like the Best Thing Since Sliced Bread The most important quality of a true leader is being equal to their followers because it shows that the leader treats everyone, including themselves, the same; they do not misuse their power. William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies helps to show that the character Jack is a non-example because he abuses his power of being the pseudo-leader of the hunters, Jack makes his followers do everything for him. He treats his followers as good-for-nothing servants. This demonstrates why Jack isn’t a good leader because he only wants to feel powerful by manipulating the gullible younger boys, called littluns in the novel, and how they think. He spent his time relaxing on a makeshift chair made from a large rock and demanding for a drink while his followers are preparing dinner from the pig that they all hunted-- once he called for a meeting, he decided to threaten his followers by pointing at them with a spear to get them to cower into submission. Leaders respect their followers and are empathetic to help influence their followers to do the right thing. In 1984, written by George Orwell, the government doesn’t allow the freedom of speech, in fact anything that allows people to say anything that is an opinion based on the government and how it controls the British citizens will lead to being killed by the government, or at least 25 years in a forced-labor camp.
