Is Lying Ever Justified Lying is one of the most common acts carried out by people that is seen as morally wrong. Lying is defined as “a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood.” (“Lie”) The three main type of lies: peacekeeping lies, protective lies, and trust keeping lies. The thought of whether or not to lie is a moral problem that everyone goes through. Most people would say that lying is always wrong. Lying usually does not end well and is morally wrong, but when the lie is being used to save lives it can be justified.
Protective lies are commonly used by someone who intentionally does not tell the truth because they believe it will benefit the person. "A little inaccuracy sometimes saves tons of explanation." (Truth About Deception) The person telling the lie truly believes it will help the person emotionally or physically if they do not know the whole truth. …show more content…

“Lying can be giving some information while believing it to be untrue, intending to deceive by doing so.” (BBC - Ethics - Lying) A example of someone who had to tell a lie and deceive others to protect people she cared about was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman had to lie and deceive many people to protect the people most important to her. She lied so she could bring groups of slaves out of Maryland on the underground railroad. If Harriet Tubman would have not lied the slaves would have never escaped and the other people trying to rescue them may have been caught. Harriet tubman lied, but she did it to save the lives of many families and groups from the life of a slave and by doing that also saved many lives. The type of lies the Harriet Tubman told are acceptable because they were told for the greater good and protection of others. If the lie can save lives or protect the safety of peoples it can be
