The internet is an immense part of everyone’s lives, whether it’s used for work, school, or entertainment and it’s at risk. The federal communications commission (FCC) is planning to end net neutrality, which is a big deal. Net neutrality or open internet is the principle of having free, equal access to the internet, without having to pay or have internet service providers blocking and slowing down websites. For many years, people have been fighting to keep the internet free, and big companies and the FCC have been fighting back. Fighting to keep net neutrality has never been more important than now because the vote to end net neutrality is on December. 14. The internet gives many platforms for people to share their opinions, and acts like one itself. Individuals come together on big platforms, Twitter, instagram, etc, to talk about worldwide issues or even personal ones. With the end of net neutrality, less and less voices will be heard, and fewer perspectives would be seen. The article “Seven Reasons: Why We Need Net Neutrality Now” wrote, “Freedom of the press only extends to those who own it… But the Internet has changed all that, delivering the press -- and in theory its freedoms -- to any person with a good idea and a connection to the Web,” (Timothy Karr). This quote is saying that the internet allows everybody to use the internet to share their ideas, not just people who have money. But if the FCC decides to have a closed internet, those with money would have more opportunities to have their voices
