Is Oedipus good? In fact, that's a very broad and general question, which makes it really hard to answer. My opinion on Oedipus is that he's a very caring person as shown by the book, "The Theban Plays," by Sophocles. In one scene of the book, we see Oedipus trying to find out who the killer of the king is. He says things like, "And while you suffer, none suffers more than I." This shows his loyalty and devotion to his people. The thing that makes these moments so memorable and sticks out to us is so much because of the way Sophocles uses irony and our knowledge as readers. As Oedipus is trying desperately to solve his case, we, the readers, already know that he is the murderer of the king and that irritates us throughout this whole process. …show more content…

So after all that Oedipus has been through, it is fair to say he is indeed a good man. Oedipus generally cares for everybody and doesn't fear his fate. Instead of running away from it and avoiding it like his mother and father did, he wanted to dig into it and find out the truth. Which although in the end didn't turn out too well, gouging out his eyes was a terrible thing to do. He anyways showed no fear of death and fate itself. Here Julian states that Oedipus killed all the people in this carriage, and that was really a shameful thing to do. The thing that makes this worst is that one of the passengers was a king, his father in fact! Julian argues that it was really stupid of him to do this and kill everyone on the carriage although the people inside did nothing to him. It was because of his anger and foolishness, he brought this upon himself. Indeed this was a strong argument but I want to challenge it. Although Oedipus did kill everyone and got mad, it was really not his fault and we can't blame him for that. The man already has a huge prophecy on his head to deal with, and now this. We also can't forget that before he met the wagon, he was leaving his fake parents to stop the prophecy from happening. This shows that Oedipus is in fact, a good man if not more. He is saddened by the fact of leaving his homeland, but he does so to protect his parents. He proves he is unselfish by leaving them to avoid the prophecy. Showing he cares about others more than
