Processed foods contain all sorts of artificial ingredients and lot 's of preservatives to increase the shelf life. In this day in age, with the immense increase in illnesses such as cancer, one cant help but wonder, Is processed food the source, is it safe for human consumpition?
What is Processed Food:
The term “processed food” applies to any food that has been altered from its natural state in some way, either for safety reasons or convenience. The definition of what constitutes a processed food can vary slightly, but it usually refers to foods that are packaged in boxes, cans or bags. These foods need to be processed extensively to be edible and are not found as is in nature. In addition to going through many complex processing steps, processed foods often contain additives, artificial flavorings and other chemical ingredients. In addition, there is also processed meat, this includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham as well as canned meat and meat-based sauces. Processed meat has been modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste and the main methods are smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives. Food processing techniques include freezing, canning, baking, drying and pasteurising products. Throughout my short eighteen years of life, I have always gobbled up everything that pleased me. If I wanted a cookie, I would have seven. If I wanted to eat ramen at twelve o’clock at night, I would walk to the kitchen and cook it. I never had a problem with eating immense amounts of food. In contrast, my mother always believed that I ate too little, so I was always encouraged (sometimes forced) to consume anything and everything when I felt the smallest inclination to eat. I never thought about where the food came from or what process was used to make and ship these goods. If I desired food, there was nothing stopping me from having it. My roommate in college, however, changed my perception of food and related processed materials.
Food preservatives can be broken down into two basic groups- natural and chemical. Natural preservatives are methods such as sun-drying, freezing, or adding other ingredients like honey that essentially slow down the speed at which food spoils. Chemical preservatives are chemicals added to foods for the same purpose as natural preservatives are. It is the same with additives; the difference being that they may be also used to purposely change a food’s look and taste. Preservatives and additives are used in most of foods, especially in our pre-packaged meals, whether it be natural or chemical versions being added.
